It is my understanding that a diesel engine needs to have the correct Ph for the antifreeze. I bought some Ph paper from NAPA but need to know what to look for? Thanks

Some Ford diesels require an anticavtation additive in their coolant but it isn't needed in the Cummins. If you never change the antifreeze there may be a problem with acidity(PH). Just change the antifreeze and use distilled water and you'll be fine.

Most of the paper strips used to check the PH just change color to indicate acidity levels.

A few years ago i had a heavy truck mechanic tell me he added some antifreeze to increase the PH I think. i want the magic #? Is it 7 being neutral? The mechanic also told me that the antifreeze could possiblly cause pitting in the motor if the PH was off.

Ok Gentlemen

The test strips I purchased from NAPA test for PH, Freeze Protection, and Nitrite. The PH is around 8. Freeze protection is -60 degrees and the nitrite is 0. According to the directions the Nitrite needs liquid S. S. I or DCI-IV additive to recharge the antifreeze. What is this nitrite and what are the additives? And what do they do?

I don't remember what the numbers are but you can also measure the voltage on the coolant to tell you how it is doing?

Using a digital volt meter, ground the black probe and put the red one in the anti-freeze.

If it reads . 7 volts it needs changed.
