How many of you have this "option" that paid money for it, only to find out that it isn't limited slip? Our '06 Megacab has this listed right on the sticker, $285 for the option. It doesn't limit spin, at all, never did. I had it at the Dodge dealer in '06 and again in '07, both times the truck was stuck by just pulling slightly off the side of the road with 2 tires on and 2 tires off pavement. My '99 has limited slip, it works! You can lift one rear wheel and it will still move. '06, forget it, you ain't going nowhere. I actually did this in the parking lot at the dealer, they told me it is SUPPOSE to do that. I called Chrysler and complained, that got me nowhere. They REFUSED to do anything about it.

So what are they trying to sell here? $285 "option" for what?

Jeff

It is a worm-gear limited slip. It is torque sensing, you will need to have some slippage before it will engage. I have heard if you apply the brake a little it should supply enough resistance to engage both wheels giving you the traction you need.

The helical gear style limited slip in your 06 is superior in function than just about all limited slips, UNLESS you are stopped. The helical gear style needs motion to function properly, so if you stop and you need both tires to spen then your screwed. . But when moving the helical gears do a much better job than a clutch style, and they won't send you sideways like a clutch setup. . So its a trade-off. But if you need more offroad traction I suggest the OEM front e-locker.

OEM front E-locker???

Mine has always been a pos. The dealer ran me through the operation of it and it all sounds good but it works like crap. I've tried tapping the brakes, putting the parking brake on a little and nothing makes it perform like a Dana. My wifes 08 had no issues with getting traction but the 06 is a one wheel wonder on everything except pavement. It will leave one track in ice or dirt or mud but two tracks on dry pavement... ... ... ... ..... sort of useless in my opinion.

Mine on the 2005 works just fine, at least on our gravel drivewway, as well as the one time I drove all day through snow and ice. On the gravel drive if I fell or hear it slipping, I tap and drag the service brake for a couple seconds and the spinning wheel grabs right in.

:-laf I paid for the option as well but only have a one tire fryer... ... ... ..... :-laf

I will try the brake thing next time, maybe that is the trick. I always just grumble and pop the dash knob into 4 wheel high

I know of a man who paid for it and the truck would not climb a ditch alongside his driveway. When he took it back to Dodge and they finally relented and pulled the diff cover they found that it had an open diff Although the build sheet showed that it was an anti-spin). That coupled with injectors failing, a turbo failure, and a few other things he returned the truck under the Lemon Law.

It is a sad story, true. But it is the only one that I know of where Dodge took the truck back because of it being a problem child. Oh, I believe that it was an '08

My 03 has an "open" rear diff. I was surprised when I took the cover off to change fluid, especially since I had already bought the expensive fluid from Dodge. I already understand how the factory unit is supposed to work. Anyone got any other options to try? and what about the front diff? Shadrach

Mine works good, at speed like mentioned. As already mentioned, a helical type LSD has shortcomings with no wheel speed (I. E. , detroit tru-trac, torson-gleason, aam, etc).

I have had tons of open diff vehicles, and even though my aam one sucks when you arent moving, it is 9,000 times better than open diff at any speed at all (donuts, high speed desert stuff, etc). Plus, it wont wear out nearly as fast as the clutch type LSD's used in dana's and others (trac lok, powr lok, sure grip, "posi track", etc).

This is the One I like... I reserved My Judgment until this winter. . The factory Pinion bearing failed so I replaced the entire differential with truetrac. It is more dangerous on level ground in tight spots were if it spins it will slide sideways if not careful, Off-road and Ice/Snow pack roads it out performs the AA in every category. Yes I will never pay for LSD again I will get the open and replace with Eaton Truetrac.

On edit: Current LSD, If AA improves the design I will re-investigate.

My '05 limited slip works well. From a stop a tap of the brake gets both rears turning and you are good to go. My '99 LSD was not worth having and only worked when you didn't need it.

I've been reading through this thread with some interest. I have the anti-spin option on my '03 and it seems to work okay. The one thing that I have noticed is that after I've had it to the dealer for transmission and diff service, I can feel the rear end grabbing when I make turns. The sharper the turn, the more grab I feel. Over time, it goes away until I take it back in for service. Is there some sort of adjustment that they do on these?

My 06 diff worked great until last winter at about 150k then it just died. I have been looking to see what else is out there to replace it but just don't want to spend the money. But on the other hand these trucks stock let alone modified just put down so much power you need al the help you can get.
