The word in the lastest TDR was that the 2002's were not having lift pump failures, due to improvements in the lift pumps. Any failures with stock 2002 trucks? :-{}

I have a friend who works in the service Dept at a Dodge dealer... ... asked him the same question. His answer was he is starting to see a few 2002's and of course 2001's. It would be my assumptions that these were likely stock trucks.

I'm seeing a slight drop in WOT pre-filter pressure at around 11,000 miles. New, it never dropped below 12-13 PSIG. I can pull it down to 10-11 PSIG now when towing the 5ver.

It still holds 16 PSIG at idle.

I would normally expect to see a SLIGHT drop in PSI over a period of time with these type pumps due to normal impeller wear - perhaps on the order of 1-2 psi...

Check it with a fuel pressure gauge. If you don't want to install one you can get one from Briar Hopper (mechanical) screws onto the VP44 do a search and you can read all about it.

Lift pump failure-`02

:( I too have an `02 and my pressures are: idle 15#`s cruise-12-13- WOT -4# yes that is right4 and if i keep my foot in it it will continue to fall. BTW trk is not stock fueled. L/P will have a short life as soon as the Holley Black gets here.

My engine is totaly stock and I just replaced my lift pump last week with only 21,400 miles on the truck. I know that I could have used my warranty but I would like to keep those jack legs away from my truck as long as possible, so I went to Cummins and bought a replacement pump myself and installed it the next day. I have observed some scarry seens in the work bay at my local dealership and I don't want to let that unprofessional attitude to get near my truck. I worked to hard to get it to let it get abused by a few tech's who don't care about quality workmanship!

My pressure's seem lower than the others here. I got 14 to 15 psi at an idle and 8 to 10 psi while cruising and as low as 5 psi at W. O. T. . Could my new lift pump be bad ? Thomas

Bob, that's the one I got. I used my Cummins parts catalog to come up with the part # and the guy at Cummins looked it up with my engine serial # to varify it.

Do my pressure #'s sound to low for a good pump ?

Thomas... .

Those numbers do sound low to me. I just swapped mine out after 50K (numbers had been declining, but it hadn't died).

I now get 14-15 at idle, 13-14 cruising, and 9-11 WOT. Those are similar to readings I got on my OEM pump when the FP gauge went in at ~20K. They finally dropped to 11 at idle, 9-10 cruising, and 3-4 WOT.

24V DSL AGHHHHHH, that's what I was thinking. I guess I will be calling Cummins up tomorrow to see if I can get this 8 day old pump exchanged. Thanks for the response, Thomas

Eventhough my new pump is a defect I still would rather replace it myself just to know that it is done right !

I am afraid my pressure readings are a little off because my gauge is several inches lower than my isolater and that means my actual readings are lower than what is on my gauge.

I guess it's alway better to ask first but if they hesitate I would tell them you are exchanging it. That pressure on a new pump is not right. I would even mention that you think they should take the old one off and put the new one on since you already had to do the work the first time.

Pitbull , I would like to keep the boy's at the Cummins shop in as good of mood as possible for future purchases, but they better not give me any crap about this exchange. I am not going to ask for anything special, just a good and properly working pump and I will be happy.

I think that it just plain SUCK's that we have a bum lift pump design; but, if this is all we have to put up with, than it is still worth it to me to have such a great engine. A small price to pay for such overbuild in an engine. Thomas

Some of you guys sound lucky to me. I just put in my fuel press. guage two weeks ago. I get just a bit over 12 at idle 9 while cruizing at 75 and can suck it down to under 5 wot. Unfortunately my truck just turned a year old and only has 9300 mi. and it's already lower than alot of yours. Not good for being so new. I'll keep an eye on it over the next couple of months and see what happens.

I just called my Cummins dealer and all is well. I just have to fill out the warranty paper work and exchange my bad pump for a good one. I offered to let them see the pressure readings but they said "no problem" just bring in the old one. It is nice to deal with professional parts people that have some product knowledge instead of getting that blank stare like at the Dodge dealer and local parts stores. Thomas

I have a stock 2002 HO, I had the lift pump replaced at 25,000 miles. I installed the fuel pressure gauge (post filter) at 5,000 miles and it was 13 idle/10 70mph/ 8 WOT at around 24,000 miles I noticed a drop at idle to 11 psi and replaced the fuel filter. I was able to get it to drop to 0 WOT up a couple of hills. I called the dealer they checked it out, asked me about the gauge and then replaced the pump under warranty. They hadn't seen a truck with a FP gauge in it yet and they had only replaced lift pumps when they died. It is back to the 13/70/8 fuel pressures.

tarussel , its not so much a bad pump design , its the pumps placement , to far from the fuel source .

i have my tank out and am finally installing my new fuel system which will have the stock pump mounted on the engine as back up , and all i will need to do is flick a switch to go from one system to the other .
