Neighbor has a 1992 W250, 5 speed, stock engine. He had the VE pump rebuilt a couple of years ago and I turned it up a bit. Other than that, it is stock. It has the stock non waste gated turbo and his EGT's can climb when towing. Is there a waste gated turbo that might be better to keep the EGT's in check when pulling hard? HX35 from a second gen?

I think the HX35 would be the best and cheapest way to go for a stock truck
Is this a higher volume than stock turbo for a first gen? Is it a direct fit?
I had a 2001.5 automatic that had the HY35 on it. I put a HX 35 on it and my egt went down some.

The compressor wheels between a intercooled 1st gen H1C and a 2nd gen HX35 are the same but the difference is in the exhaust, the HX35 has a better flowing snail and will spool up a lot faster. You can actually put a HX35 snail on a H1C and it will work quite nice but it is easy to push the H1C to far that way like I did. but yes a HX35 will bolt right on in place of s H1C

The EGT's were far better than the stock turbo and at the time I was running +40 hp injectors, BD fuel pin, and a tuned pump.

Thanks for the information. There is a HX35 for sale locally for $250. Don't know any more about it as I haven't called on it. My neighbors truck is stock other than the VE pump turned up and the injectors were replaced.

The HE351s are a common upgrade as well. They were found stock on trucks maybe '04.5 - 07. They are super quick spooling and Cummins designed for a 325 hp engine.

I had a HE351 on my truck for a while, I was not overly impressed with it, it did spool quick but the snail is to small and i had real high EGTs if i didnt keep an eye on it. plus they are not a direct bolt on like a HX35. To install a 351 you need a new exhaust flang, and a adapter boot to go from the turbo outlet to the boost tube, and the outlet is a different length so it will change the routeing of the boost tube a little, and you need to find a way to hold the waste gate closed as the factory actuator cant be used.
