I need a quote on hauling a tool box ...

Honda 2000i owners

Wife and I are taking our slide-in camper to the Burning Man event in two weeks. Looking for advice from anyone who has attended in previous years or going this year. As we need to be totally self sufficient for a week in a desert environment, I am thinking of building a 42" hitch extension (pin to pin) to tow a small utility trailer (I have not been able to find an extension on the web). I have a fairly beefy hitch (see signature) that is 2" and will load the trailer for close to zero hitch weight. The trailer would make it easier to haul our Yamaha 2400isHC generator, 15 to 20 gallons of gas, two fold up bikes and an extra 30 gallons of water.

Make sure that you are prepaired for extreme conditions. We always go to the Black Rock 2 weeks after the BM event, can be hot, cold, windy and above all DUSTY. Plan on spending lots of time cleaning your rig when you get back home. I would reccoment taking some extra "Anti Weird pills" just in case. Give us a full report on how it goes.

I do plan on taking a bunch of blue or grey painters tape to seal the doors and hood of the truck from dust. Also plenty of dust masks and will be ready for temps ranging from freezing to 100F.

Goggles are your friend! Sunscreen is mandatory. I'd bring a solar shower. They do "barter" water out there and you're really not too far from Gerlach, though there's not much there. Go to Bruno's and have the raviolis and a Picon Punch. Towing a trailer with zero hitch weight may make it squirrley. Usually you want about 15% of the trailer weight on the hitch. Pop ups and awning are great... until the wind blows. Take them down quickly and make sure no one else's is blowing in your direction. Be really careful on the road. Every year there are some bad accidents and even deaths on the two lane road from I80 to the Blackrock.

We don't go to BM, but we do a lot of dry lake camping. Tape is a good idea and make sure your vents are all closed when driving in on the playa. Recirc in the truck, windows closed. You shouldn't need an extra air filter but it's not a bad idea to have with you. You'll be on pavement most of the way and then your truck will be parked, sucking in no dust.

On our eastern Sierra trip last year BM participants were returning home to SoCal on 395. Every conceivable vehicle and trailer was returning. Bicycle preference seemed to be juvenile sized cycles regardless of rider's size. We saw bookoo bikes lashed onto van roofs. Spoke to some attendees at Gus' jerky and their truck, bodies and I assume their internal organs were covered in a fine white dust. They had a great time but hoped to quit coughing in a couple of days.
