My daughter talked me into getting a new kitten for Christmas. The problem is our current cat (about 3 yrs. old) hates it. She hisses and howls at it. What would be the best way to get her over this? I thought about putting the kitten in a cage for protection and putting both cats in a small room to get used to each other.

I am by no means a cat person or know much about those critters. However I was told by a cat person that her way to get a pair of cats to like eachother is to put them in a shower stall (or other small area enclosed) covered in like sardine oil or something else they BOTH like a lot(though it could be cover the smaller unliked cat in the oil). They end up licking it off eachother. They will smell and need to be cleaned afterwards but apparently it works (I've never seen it first hand though).

Let`s get ready to RUMBLE!

Let them get the pecking order established without interfering. The little one will get tired of getting thumped & start to fall into line. Very rare for an adult to kill or hurt a kitten. Seen this every time we get a new cat. Only had to remove one from the place ever. DK.

My cats never did get along very well. The one tried, but the other didn't like him. They ended up ignoring each other for about 14 years. Just a little spat every now and then.

This past July 4th my wife brought home a 6 week old kitten, then in Aug we got another this one was approx 4 months old at the time and in Oct we got ANOTHER 9 week old kitten (yes we are insane). We have had good luck with keeping them separated for about 24-48rs (put the new one in a closed off room) and letting them get used to the new scents. After the initial "break in" we let them actually meet each other. Wemight have been very lucky but we had no major spats, just a little hissing and re-adjusting of the pecking order and now all 3 of them get along great.
