I see a lot of trucks and suv's running the Nokian Hakkapelitta LT up here. It is a winter truck tire that can be studded and I believe it is made in Finland. It is available in size 265/70R17, not sure of the load rating though.

Also the Cooper Discoverer M+S is available in 265/70R17 load range E.

I have no first hand experience with either of these tires but the guys running the Nokian's seem to really like them. Hope this helps.

Cheers!

For a DRW I dont think there is a really good choice yet. The Michelin LTX M&S would probably be my first choice. On a SRW truck the BFG All Terrain KO is THE best choice I have found. I have them on both of my SRW trucks. One truck lives in Minnesota and sees lots of icy windblown roads. The other truck lives in the mountains of Colorado and sees snow by the foot regularly. The BFG is rated as a dedicated winter tire. It has the industries "snowflake on the mountain" symbol on the sidewall. I can't say enough good things about the traction of these tires in the winter, they are awesome. I run 285/70-17s on mine. Coopers with studs are popular in CO as well but illeagal in most states.

DO NOT get procrap A/T's. The price of them is tempting($470 for 4) but there bad tires in the wet. The 33" procomps that were on my old ford were great, but the 35"s on my dodge Suck. #@$%!

I ran Cooper ATs (or was it LTs?) on my 99 and they were THE best snow tire (LT255/85R16 size) I ever had... live in the snowbelt of PA. But I don't know if they come in a 17" flavor.

The stock BFG Rugged Trails suck. And not to bash, but the BFG A/T ko's didn't impress me in snow either.

I'm going to be looking for a set too, so I'll be watching this thread myself.

My BFG All Terrains are awesome in the snow. I've had the snow up to my bumpers and it would still truck along.

The "stock" BFG's that were optional on my 04 totally sucked on ice and in the snow last year. Also, really BAD uneven wear patterns. Now, on my 04. 5, my Michlins are really great. They grip the road with min slippage. Also, 14,000 miles and they still look new! The BFG's looked like they were 50% GONE at 14k. NOT impressed with BFG at all!

Just my personal opinion. Might I add that the Michlins give a much better highway ride than the BFG's. The BFG's seemed to follow all the cracks in the road and were just a PITA. Ill never own another set on anything I own. To think, D/C had an additional charge of about $250 for the BFG upgrade, just for the RWL. . Ill take a blackwall anyday :D

My cooper pizza cutters have you beat... I had snow coming up the hood onto the windshield during one snow storm in PA. I was also yelled at by the plow driver since we were under a state emergency... although he was following my tracks!!! He caught up to me when I stopped to help dig out another car... .

I was just was stating what experience I have had... I had them on a Jeep cherokee... they were ok, but didn't really impress me like my coopers did. They tended to slide way more than I would have expected them too. And the rugged trails still suck. My coopers stuck to whatever there was... I rarely needed 4wd.

I might try a set of the cooper CTs this go around.

I have a set of Coopers on my Corvette and they are GREAT in all weather. They seem to grip the road in ANY cond! Awesome tread design and not a problem in the 3 years Ive owned them. They look like Im going to get over 60k out of them and since my Vette only sees 1 to 2 k a year, they most likely will be the last tire I buy. The OEM Goodyears were not that great. But, most OEM tires are the worst of the worst. Coopers and Michlens are my choice... Just my 3. 75 cents worth :D

I had a hard time finding a 10-ply winter tire in a stock 17" dimension; however, thanks to someone on this board I found a set of Cooper Discoverers in 10-ply from an online retailer. I had them studded and they did very well last winter. They were on national backorder this time last year but maybe production has caught up.

I got them from tiresavings.com. I see they are still there in 10-ply as of today (9-29).

I had the BFG AT's on my last truck, they did alright until they got about 1/2 worn, then they sucked! I then got Cooper Discoverer ST's, and they were awesome. I now have Cooper Discoverer STT's and can't wait for winter this year :D

Yup - That's what I have in the LT315/70R-17D size also from www.tiresavings.com and I have them with no lift on stock rims. These 315's are D Range but still rated around 3200 lbs per tire like the 265 E's. Totally changed the look of the truck. Really soft tires tho but grip like mad in the rain as compared to the really hard 265 E range from the factory.....

They're really a good value and American made too.

The first winter I used my BFG All Terrain KOs they were very good. I drove them all year and used up a lot of tread. The second winter they were noticeably less effective, but still better than the original Michelins that came on the truck. After running them all summer again this year, and having about 50,000 miles on them, I’ll be getting new ones at the start of snow season.

Bfg

All terrain TA's are the best have had two sets on two trucks, they arent cheap ~200/each. I got em from tire rack and then had them mounted and balanced at CJ's

Good l;uck this is supposed to be a "bad" winter according to they of "they say"

:-laf

I know it's most likely not what you're looking for but I'll throw t out there for folks who might be interested. I've got Mich XDE-MS in the 19. 5 size. Absolutely unbelieveable on snow/ice. I hate the whine, but I might get them again just for winter traction. Wear like iron as well. 38K of towing and still at least 40-50K left.

Isuzu Rescues CTD

Had to get this right. Last winter the 285-70 17 BFG AT KO's held their own until a white out interfered with my forward mojo.

The Isuzu powered (back wheel chained and eventually, dual front chained ultimate 4X4 (formerly FERD !!) blazed the rescue trail to my CTD.

Chains are required when pushing drifts half way up the grill.....

Bring on the winter (!!!) though I am eyeballing the Toyo ATS for mileage.
