work for a guy on the side that sells used CTD's, he got a 01 from sale with 38,000 miles on it. almost did'nt make it home, come to stops it surges really bad, no power. get to shop and start looking it over, has a reman vp44 on it, has mopar fuel pump relocated in tank with relay, also notice that the front cover has been off (someone went wild with silicon). also found the cam sensor unpluged and zip tied to the harness.
pulled codes and got a ton, apps code, 1693 code, and others. put in new cam sensor, apps switch. still no power, has engine miss, and still a 1693 code. pulled vp pump to see if key was in right and correct one-- it was.
next pulled the front cover to try to see why someone else had it off, noticed someone had painted the timing marks to make sure they are lined up ??? also noticed that the back side of the front cover had a wear pattern in it. found out that the cam gear was walking out of the block toward the front of the cover and grinding in to the cover.
someone made a makeshift cam button and bolted it to the cover. it looks like there was a factory button on the cover at one time ? anyone ever see one.
anyway i feel that my 1690 code is due to cam walking into the cover, then making the air ap for the cam sensor to wide, meaning no signal. but the tach still works... also put in a new cam sensor. any input ? also how can one tell what year the block is ? the data plate is correct for the truck. but the rad support has been out of this truck. also noticed that it has a orange color gasket between the block and timing cover, and also under the intake manifold to head. did cummins ever use orange gaskets.
