Here I am

Any ideas where to find a 4 cyl ISB?

12 Valve In place of a 24 Valve?

Alternator/ regulator frusturating!

I have looked online and I can find new ones all over the place, but for $5G. Ideally I am looking for a good preferably cheap used ISB 3. 9 liter engine. . Preferably complete. I can't seem to find a single application that they came in regularly to look for wrecked trucks. Any ideas? Anyone know anyone that sells these?

Thanks,

Andre:

When I bought my ISB 170, I found a guy out in Colorado that had one with only 2300mi on it. I believe he had it advertised in the TDR classifieds. I can give you his contact info if you need it. Maybe he still has it...

I doubt you'll find many if you're looking in truck applications. Look in heavy equipment classifieds, as they are a very common engine in off road equipment. Look at truck stops, etc. for magazines like heavy truck trader and equipment traders, they're full of ads for reman cummins of all sizes, including 4bts. Also Rock and Dirt (a nation-wide) equipment trader type magazine has tons of ads in their mailing, I don't know if their website is any good, but you can give it a try at www.rockanddirt.com

Good luck.

Ben.

I should learn to read before I post... the same ad lists low mileage 4BT engines for about 2200 bucks, not much more for 6bt and 6cts... .

I would like to know where you have found new ones for $5k as I am looking also? Thanks

I found one for $4500 and there is a place on the east coast that is advertsied on dieselenginetrader.com for $4500 as well that you might try. They are almost all sae #3 and I was concerned about bolt pattern issues because I'm not sure you can bolt a Dodge or Chevy plate to is as easily because the 3. 9s have the fuel pump and power steering pump on the rear. But I'm not 100% sure about this...

If I pass on the one I am thinking of I'll gladly forward that info along as well. I'll try the truck trader, very good idea. I have a 4BT that I can use that I somewhat already own, but it still isn't too cheap either, with fees etc from the breadvan closing costs...

Maybe you can find one in an old piece of case farm/construction equipment. I've seen quite a few case dozers and backhoes powered by 4bt cummins'. Not exactly cheap donor rigs tho...

Here's an important fact to keep in mind:

The oil pans on the 3. 9L HPCR ISB's can be swapped end for end - so you can run front/rear sump. All you need is a new oil pump suction tube. Here are the Cummins part numbers (mine are on order):

4896964 oil pickup tube for REAR sump

4898301 oil pickup tube gasket

4897877 is the oil pan gasket (I think I goofed up this part number in another thread... )

My ISB 170/Allison LCT-1000 combo came as a front sump and depending on how things work out - it may stay as a front sump. But, I'll have the parts to go either way with it.
