Hello to all. This is my first post and I wish it were under better circumstances but here goes. I have had zero problems with truck to date, yesterday truck ran fine all morning then #@$%! I back out of my driveway and head up the hill. I am accelerating at about 1/2-3/4 throttle and just as i crest the hill the motor completely dies, turbo gives a loud chuff, dead motor#@$%!. I eased of to the side of the road put it in park turn off key and cycle 3 times; no codes. I attempt to restart the motor cranks hard for a few seconds and starts but it seemed like it was running on 2 cylinders so I shut it down, I waited a few minutes and attempted to restart and now it wont even roll over:confused:, I checked fuses, none blown. I called Dodge Dealer and made arraingements for tow 2hrs later I am at the dealer and they say maybe they will get to it tomorrow afternoon. So it is around noon and I am terrified waiting to hear that I need a new motor. Any input would be greatly appreciated, I hope it is something simple that I overlooked but I know in my heart that this is going to hurt, I would just like some idea what to brace for. Thanks in Advance

Sorry!!!

Truck is 2000 Ram 2500 4x4 Banks Power Pack;Edge Comp;AFE Stage II w/ ProGuard 7;DDII Injectors;ATS TC and Transmission w/ Commander module;Isspro EGT,Tans Temp and boost gauges. BFG AT KO 285/75-16. Thanks Again

I wish it were that simple.

I had a full tank of fuel at the time and the filter has maybe 5000 miles on it. What worries me is the fact that the motor would not turn over. I fear it is something mechanical, something ugly and expenseive.

First, Change the Fuel Filter
Check if you have Fuel Pressure to the VP44

If there are no codes, you could have a failed Crank Position Sensor. Sometimes when this fails, there are absolutely no codes generated. This assuming that the motor cranks.

You could have a bad engine ground, causing issues with the ECM.

You could also have a failed VP44.

I hate to say this about the dealer, you probably know more about the engine under the hood of that truck than any tech working at the dealership (I am not trying to bash the dealers, but I have found very few dealers with actual qualified experienced diesel mechanics). They might just start hanging parts.

Hopefully it is nothing internal inside the engine.

Let us know what they find.

Thanks for Input So Far

I Did the CPS about 5000 miles ago, so I doubt it is that so soon. I agree about the techs. at most dealers, I would usually do the work myself but I have no place to work and if a tear down is in order, it is not something I want to do in my driveway. Plus I just don't have the time to troubleshoot and deal with repairs this is my only means of transportion and I just need it done. The PT Cruiser rental is a poor substitute:p I heard from the dealership this evening and they will get to it first thing tomorrow. I will be sure to post any updates as I receive them, I am leaning towards KDP myself but we will see tomorrow. Anyone with KDP experiances, I would love to know what it ended up costing you. Thanks to everyone for the input

A KDP failure on that year truck is very rare. The entire assembly was redesigned in the 24v trucks, but you do see very rare instances of this failure on the 24v engines. This mostly occured on the very first 24v engines on the 98. 5 trucks, but again, this was very rare.

If it has broken, you will at a minimum need to pull the front of the engine apart and look for damage to the timing gears. There could also be damage to the valve train and/or piston damage.

If you search through the older 2nd gen truck area, you will find much more information on KDP failures.

Well? What's going on with your truck? I hope it's not bad news.

Update

Hello to everyone, thanks for the suggestions. I am picking up the truck today, VP puked and the starter went at the same time. I am glad to be getting rid of the PT Cruiser and to be picking up my baby, I am not glad that my wallet will be $3655. 82 lighter:{.

I'm happy you are getting your truck back, but sad it's costing you an arm and a leg. That's why I won't go to any dealer for anything other then warranty.

Boy, that stinks on ice to say the least. Do yourself a favor, and get a fuel pressure gauge installed on there. It is likely your pift pump isnt in too good of shape. From my understanding, that is normally how it goes- lift pump craps out, then takes the injector pump in short order.
