Has anyone had clearance issues between the rear Mag Hytec diff. cover & their spare tire? I've heard they can be quite close to each other, and I was thinking of adding one to my truck if there is good clearance. My truck is a stock height 4x4. Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,

J. S.

I have had mine for 4 years now and no problems, although I did notice after about a year I had a spot that looked like the spare tire may have bumped the cover, so i loosened the spare and pushed it towards the back of truck and then tightened it back up and has been fine since

After I installed the mag-hytec, the clearance between it and the spare was very close. I pulled the spare back and used a small ratcheting cargo strap to hold it back for extra security.

I do alot of towing with a 5th wheel and when I hook up the trailer, the rear end drops approx 3 to 4 inches and the spare tire is very close to the entire diff cover.

I researched this quite a bit before I went with the PML cover. They have two for the American Axle Dodge trucks. One that is very similar "boxy" to the Mag-Hytec and one is that is rounded at the top.

I called them to ask questions and they designed the rounded one specifically for the Dodge trucks for the clearance issues. It holds approx 0. 25 qts less than the square one they offer and approx 2. 75 qts less than the Mag-Hytec. It holds about 1 more quart than stock.

I also decided to go with the PML because it uses the stock gasket which is very high quality. The Mag-Hytec uses a small oring.

Both are better than stock, but the PML fits my needs better.

Good luck and regards.

No clearance issues with mine. My spare tire is a taller LT255/85R16 and there's plenty of room. Oh, it just dawned on me, do you have the short bed?

Not sure but this may cause a clearance problem. My truck has the long bed. Mike

I have a short bed with the MagHytek, also have a 35" tire up in the holder. It is a close fit, I pulled the spare toward the rear, had a strap on it for a while then I made a little spacer block to hold it toward the back, mounted it on the front side. Plenty of room now.

I found that a short piece of 2x4 lumber made a good spacer. The tip of the 2x4 inserts into the channel of the rear cross-member of the spare tire hanger, and the face of the 2x4 rests against the U-shaped fender aft of the cable hanger. Essentially I've extended the tip of the U-shaped fender so it pushes the inside of the rim of the spare tire away from the differential cover. The 2x4 is 5-3/4" in length, and simple nail above the fender keeps it from falling out, while the channel of the cross-member quite naturally locks it in place. The block is oak, and I plan to replace the nail with a stainless steel screw, so it should have acceptable longevity.

I've inserted a couple pictures.

on my 2 wheel drive with a medium load there is a issue I've had to remove the spare. On a 4x4 I don't think it's a problem unless you are going to over load the truck. I love the look from the rear with it installed.
