Looks pretty straight - back in the good 'ol days, a warmed up GM 350 and a 4-speed would be the ticket - nowadays, that 6 sounds pretty practical... ;) :D

If I did put a V-8 in, it would be a 283 for the milage. Have no plans of doing that though. Has anyone converted a powerglide column to a floor shift? If so what brand kit/shifter did you use.

thanks

ive seen people use those lokar kits. but i think they look a lil too hot-rodderish.

I have a 67 SS. I bought this car in 1980 and have gone through different phases with it. Currently it has the correct 327 block and heads. It has factory disc brakes and a 12 bolt rear with an M-20 4 speed. About the only exercise it sees now is when I start it in the garage. The rear axle is up on jack stands so that I can run it through the gears and keep everything lubed. Converting from a column shift to a floor shift should not be difficult as this was a factory option, however to make it look original could get pricey. Good luck with your project.

A few years ago, we had a 65 4dr, with the 230ci straight 6. When we wore that out, pulling a boat, we searched for a 283 block and found a 327/365hp one instead. We put that in there, and had a real sleeper in tan paint, with the 6cyl emblems. Fun car to drive. We ate the original PG transmission and swapped in a Turbo 350 with a shift kit. This thread brings back a lot of memories, since that old car was in the family since new. No rust since it started out in OK and was there most of its life.

63 Chevy II SS

I had a 63 Chevy II SS . It was my first car back in 1977 man that thing was nice. :cool: It had the 2 speed auto on the floor and from what I can rember it had a big crome plate between the bucket seats with the shifter sticking up in the middle and it had linkage on the shifter not a cable shifter. I wish I still had that car :{

Good Luck

Cliff

My brother has a 1970 that I been working on for the last 30 years. It started life as a 230cid 6 cylinder with a trans called "torque drive". Its a powerglide with a manual valve body in it. It would not shift itself by design. it was not a hot rod option, it was the powerglide with a cheep valve body in it. Since then he changed to a 350 that's around 350 hp and a M21 and 12bolt rear with 3:73's in it.

For your shifter, If you got buckets try to locate an original GM console with the shifter. Personally I would leave it stock. You also sound like you like the stock idea, its probably worth more money with the column shifter.

Here is the 71 Nova that we built for my daughter for her first car. Lots for money time and effort to get it to this point and its not complete...

About 12 years ago I bought a 70 Nova SS396 with a muncie 4-speed, hugger orange with a black interior. It was a nice car with centerlines and pro-tracs on the corners. It had lost some of its originality because someone had put a Ford 9 inch rearend with a detroit locker and 4. 33's If I remember right. Had traction bars and welded frame connectors too. Had it about a year then blew the motor. :eek: Then I made a horrible mistake and traded it for a lifted chevy 4x4... worst mistake of my life. :{

My 1st car was a 1967 Nova SS. It was already rodded with a hot 327 and a 4-speed. It was painted IROC blue (this was in 1988). The factory GM color of the IROC-Z28 in the mid-late 80's. Man it wa sharp, and fast. Anyway, I wanted a truck and sold it. I still kick my own hind end for doing that. I still get out the pics and cry occasionally. Man, was I a dumb kid.

RHasrvey. . good looking Nova, your daughter is one lucky girl

JCOlgan & Jason. . I'd love to have a '67. That is my favorite year Nova.

Hey Skip I have a soft spot for Novas, when I was in my early teens it was one of the cars I was hoping own when I got my license. I like the early ones like yours, even thought the mid '70s ones had potential with the right paint and wheels.

You oughta build that six or find a 250 to swap in. Clifford makes some go-fast parts for the six-in-a-row. I met a guy with a '63 Nova several years ago with a built 230. Said it was pretty fast, and got over 20mpg in town. Sounded mean with a fat cam and dual exhaust.

I have always loved the Nova's, my mom has a 72 SS that got stolen when i was still a wee lad. I would love to some day build up a nice little 66. The guy i bought my truck from has a nova sitting in the garage that he is building. One day i will have one. I better get a big garage for my one day vehicles

My first ride was a 62 wagon L6 with 3rd seat and a power rear window that worked. It was 1 tuff ride with me being 16 y/o and slam full of p*** & vinegar. I would often hold it back in low until 55 mph and it would lunge into high.

2nd ride 68 SS 396 4-speed Chevell. That car ate rear tires.

In 1977 I traded that on a 1975 light blue Nova L N 350 auto with 44000 miles. The 350 would smoke blue for about 5 minutes after (not during) sustained speeds over 100 mph. I recieved 2 reckless driving tickets with with the Bluestreak. Talk about an insurance delima.

Oh did I mention when I was 13 I was driving mom's 63 SS Nova on the dirt roads of Liberty City Alabama along side the banks or the Saugahatchee creek. Power sliding was fun then and 33 years later still is.
