Help on going to a 2 tone.....

High Miler Club

I've got two of these in my boat. We finished pulling one down today and got started back. Here's my question- I'm pretty faithful about checking my water additive with the test strips. I use all Baldwin stuff, treatment and strips. When we pulled the liners today they had very little pitting, if any, it was the cleanest set I've seen. I've rebuilt these before, this one in summer of '92. I'm wondering if I need to keep using the little spin on water treatment filter, I've been told it has a small tablet of treatment that slowly dissolves to maintain correct levels. I rarely change them, it seems like overkill to me, I'm thinking of not using them this time around. When the readings get lower than I like, I just add some liquid treatment. Any thoughts on leaving the small filters off ?

As long as you continue to test and maintain the cooling system the way that you have been, you don't need a filter with treatment in it.

Not all of those filters have a chemical pellet in them, some are simply a filter.

Get me the number off the one that you are using and I can tell you. For example a Fleetguard WF2077 is simply a filter, no pellet inside.

That does have a 4 unit dose built into it. If you are rarely changing it the dose is long gone before you touch it again.

You can go with a filter only or remove the whole works and plug it off.

You may wind up having to add a little more chemical by hand, that's all.

The filter only (no chemical) spin on that would fit is the WF2077 Fleetguard or a B5134 Baldwin.

You are watching the coolant closely enough as shown by the condition of your liners. If you want to do away with the charged filter you will be fine.

IMHO

Mike. :)

Thanks for that. I had this same engine on my first boat, had to rebuild it when it spun a rod bearing. This boat has two, this is the second rebuild on this one, and a number of other boats in this area have 855's. Most of them are aftercooled newer models. I've seen quite a few liners and the ones out of this engine were surprising for the lack of pitting. I was guessing what you say, the charge in the filter was long gone before I was changing them. I'll do without this time around, it's less hoses, which means fewer possible trouble spots, I like that. Thanks very much for your input- Steve
