Any one refurbish radios ?

My radios went dead .2nd one so far since 1996 . I still need to check for power but sure its dead since it was acting up before this .I see on Ebay that some companies rebuild them .Any one with experience with this ?

I have an alpine that not only gives me better than the oem but also gives me blue tooth for my phone. Works pretty well.

Tractorat , do you have a model # ? I'm guessing you had to get pieces from Cruthfield to fill the big opening in the dash . Did they also supply compatible wiring harness ?

CDE-HD148BT I got it from Car Toys not quite 2 years ago for about $350 installed. They supplied a kit that makes it look like it belongs there. They did the wiring, but I dont think it was much trouble. Their pricing included the installation, so I dont know what just the radio cost.

After I replaced both speakers went out, replaced with factory ones (they came with a Styrofoam that covered the top and back.
Radio went out about 2 years later. Went to Dodge. The Man behind the counter( mite of been member of the family who owned it). Suggested to go to a big store and buy one and save some money ( he stated thats what he did) l went to best buy and bought a Sony for a $100. A connector adapter and installation cost me another $100.
Sony am/fm/ CD, and you can hook one of those little music storage things up to it( which have never done, actually I believe it's never been on am.
And the CD player is seldom used unless I have someone riding shotgun.

Sounds to me like the radios in the 2nd gen don't hold up very good . I guess I will look into an aftermarket replacement . Would be nice to have a digital input of some kind .

http://www.carradio.com/ Just a suggestion for this outfit as I used them before. I obtained a hard to find odometer for a mechanical cluster as mine had a cracked gear in it locking it up. The outfit also repairs radios, HVAC, etc. Some places will do a "line in" jack on the factory radio, but, I haven't seen them advertised in awhile.

Crutchfield's got everything you need at bargain prices. I got an Alpine head unit which is superior in every way aside from the microscopic buttons. My I-Pod tunes sound great with the upgraded Polk Audio marine grade speakers.
If I were to do it again it'd be a double din.

I have used 1factoryradio in n carolina. they don't need a core and will charge $225 for a refurbished RAZ radio (tape,CD,AM/FM) with a bonus front panel 3.5mm aux jack for your phone/music player.

I would recommend shopping at a local salvage yard, cheap and the same unit as before. I realize the aftermarket has nice features for cheap but I don't like the controls they have, I don't like scrolling through screens to change the sound. My Infinity has an equalizer, a volume knob/on-off switch and big preset buttons, I don't have to look at it to change things. The Sony in my Jetta however...

Aftermarket radios have much better sound quality and features and are extremely easy to install with the installation kits and wiring harnesses available. But if you want to maintain the stock look there is United Radio in Syracuse NY. Don’t waste your time with a salvage yard because most of the time the vehicles sit in the yard with no windows/doors etc before the radios are removed and moisture will cause havoc with electronics.

I recall using this outfit to refurb a secondhand six disc changer head unit I bought to use with the in-dash AM/FM/Cassette radio. Did good work.
