I must say I am not a fan of small piston helicopters. Mainly because I have only been around medium/heavy Turbine Helicopters. This one for some reason has intrigued me in its seeming simplicity and gross weight: index

I dont care for the belt drive but it looks beefier and set up better than something like the rotorexec 162F. Anyone have thoughts? Seems like it may make a good time builder, I would like it more if it was certified.

The best sight ever seen was a Jolly G/G coming to hover over the jungle canopy and trailing a wire with a yellow horse collar. Thumbs up to rotorcraft drivers.

The way I see it, you can either work for a living or you can fly airplanes.

Hey BoeingDiesel, you know why people become helicopter pilots dont you? Their more afraid of working than they are of dying :-laf

What good does building time in a piston helo do? From everything I know you want turbine time.

That may have been true years ago when there were plenty of Vietnam era pilots available. Those pilots have been retiring and for the most part those that are left only have a few years before retiring. The military is not turning out pilots like they used to and unlike Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan are not going to release I tide of experienced turbine pilots into the market.

People going the civilian route cannot afford to do turbine training and especially time building. The magic number for getting an "entry" position which are usually in the gulf at places like PHI and Air Logistics or tour companies is 1,000 hours. This can be all piston time and if you get hired by these companies they will pay for your turbine training.

Interesting, from what little research I have done they were still wanting turbine time...

Oh well... good luck, being a pilot is the best job in the world.

You're absolutely right AH64... there is no better profession! I've spent 39 wonderful years doing just that, however, the industry is changing and I'm not convinced that it's ( as per ALPA ) for the better.
