I've replaced the stock muffler and resonator assembly (I know, why keep it?) with a straight pipe and a Rhino (sp?) 911 from Midas. I was wondering if there is any reason to keep the resonator? Or, should I have kept the resonator on the exhaust assembly? Thanks in advance for your thoughts and feedback.

Rhino

Hi Ken, from what i have heard out there there is no benifit too keeping it on. I have also went straight pipes a while back, but i think i will put a muffler back on. How does the rhino sound and is it a free flow muffler. TIA. Nick:)

sound

If your happy with the way your exhaust sounds, then toss it. Some people leave it on because it reduces the in-cab vibration (it did on mine).

Nick, The sound with the Rhino is a bit throatier... ... a little louder than stock, but not too bad. At idle it sounds nice, and when you step on the go pedal hard, you can notice there is less restriction, albeit a little more noise in the cab. According to Bill K. at DTT and the guys at Midas, the Rhino does help the CTD breathe better. I've also noticed a slight drop in EGT's.

To dmurdock's point, I did notice a slight increase in vibration in the cab..... not annoying though.

Kept my Resonator

I kept mine on and went 4" straight from there back. I did this for 2 reasons. One: I think it's a tad quieter than a total straight 4" (at least is sounds quieter than Wally 19's - who went straight 4" from the turbo back), and I didn't want it too loud;)

Two: I thought it looked enough like a muffler to keep Johnny Law happy;) :D - just in case.

One more thing - I thought it may help to reduce the possibility of the dreaded drone.

exhaust

i recently posted my results after trying several combinations. final nice tone was with no resonator, and a straight thru truck muffler with about a 38" body in a full 4" system. tone is deeper, not much louder, and no drone. sure can hear the turbo out the tailpipe, though. :D

In some states, Missouri for one. they have visual truck inspections once or twice a year. if they stick a mirror under the truck and see no muffler or resonator they fail you. which means you have 30 days to fix it and pass or the registration is suspended until you can pass.

if you live in a state that has visual truck inpections, you better have something to show them or you'll be walking.
