Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Any SPA fuel gauge experience with modified fuel systems? Bad luck with Westach.

I've had no luck with the Westach fuel gauge (0-30 psi) and senders (I'm using the FASS fuel pump system). I've gone thru two senders and two gauges over the past two years. The gauges (both of them) worked for a couple of months and started acting erratically, sometimes on start up the indicator needle sticks at 0 psi or 10 psi, If I tap the gauge housing the needle jumps back up to 16 psi (verified as correct with mechanical engine gauge). I've double checked my connections (mechanical and electrical) again and again, everything seems to be ok.

When I complained to Geno's where I bought the westach stuff, the first thing they asked me was if I had a modified fuel system. They seem to be hearing about failures when used with modified (fass etc. or additional lift pump mods) fuel systems. I know how much more the fass system flows (than stock) to be able to maintain my rock solid 16 psi at WOT, so maybe the flow is hard on the westach gauges.

Does any one have experience with the SPA fuel gauge (dual gauge) on modified fuel systems. I'd like some input before I spend almost twice the money (as westach) on the spa gauge (I do like the fact that it includes a programmable warning light for low fuel pressure).

thanks in advance

Jon... I have a semimod fuel system [lines with AN's and no banjo's]... but still use a lift factory pump

I have SPA's and have had "reasonably" good luck. . only one transducer so far in 115K... but SPA's are spendy to buy and maintain. . especially the boost/EGT one. . oil temp/fuel pressure has had one each transducer

I had a westach to start with and didn't like the way it looked or worked, so I changed over to a Autometer 0-30 psi pro comp ultra lite electronic gauge and so far so good (installed for about 15,000 miles now). So now I have 3 gauges on top of the dash, fuel pressure, oil pressure and air pressure (for the on board air tank) all of which are autometer. On the A pilar I have EGT, Boost and trans temp which are Dipricol and are a close match to the autometer. The last gauge is a dual needle air pressure gauge for the air lift bags located down by the 4X4 shifter. I did run a switch power line for the backlighting to prevent dimmer burnout. This setup works and looks great but I am getting tired of the idiots trying to drive next to me to see my gauges

I had the SPA digital guage for the boost and EGT's. I kept having problems and finally ripped them out and put in Diesel Dynamics brand (I think they are Westech?) Anyway... I paid for those guages 3 times over trying to get them to work with new parts. Either the gauge, wires, sending units, ect. Much cheaper to go not digital.
