To make a long story short, I blew my head gasket and had a motor built/installed. The mechanic said theres old oil in the system and it will come to the top in time. Does that sound right? Thanks

When oil and water are mixed and then allowed to sit, the oil will float to the top. However, when you run the engine, it mixes the oil and water back together. When I have had similar failures in heavy equipment, SOP was to fill the cooling system with water and Cascade or similar dish detergent. Let it idle for 20-30 minutes and then thoroughly flush with clean water before refilling with coolant.

I'll second what BDaugherty said. I've worked at a Caterpillar dealership for 26 years, 14 years as a mechanic, and we've always used Cascade dish washing detergent to clean the oil out of the cooling system after an oil cooler failure.

Watch out for the eco-police! My neighbor got reported and fined $1100 for allowing used fluids to hit the driveway. Of course this is Kalifornia and it is to be expected here.

I use a clear glass on my last flush to check for clarity. You will be suprised at what you will see when you hold a glass full or the liquid up to a light.
