A question for all you RV pullers... I need your input!

Cummins vs Duramax vs PSD

Reading through some of the profiles I see some aircraft folks... any pilots out there?
I am a commercial pilot that got into cropdusting a few years ago but am a flying enthusiast.
Flown a few different types including the old PW 1340 but currently fly the PT6 Turbines... whew what a great engine!

I'm not a pilot but I have been in the aviation industry for about 25 years. I currently work for DaimlerChrysler Aviation.
We are Chrysler's flight department. Aircraft type Gulfstream II, III, VI, V, Lear 35 K-air
Airbus 320 and so on. So as you can see if you cut me I bleed jet-a (or diesel). Love aviation just never found the time to get my pilots ticket.

I'm a PPSEL Instrument. I'm on the board of directors of Olds Forge Flyers ( http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/5207/ ). We are the oldest continuously operating flying club in the US - our 55th anniversary is January 24th. We own a 1981 Cessna 172, a 1983 Piper Archer, and a 1980 Piper Saratoga (the one I fly most). I got my license in 1991.

I'm not a pilot, but I'm an air traffic controller. Been around for 22 years. I love aviation, but never got around to taking flying lessons. Work as an approach controller at the busiest approach control in the world.

Steve G, I'm just guessing, you must be at either ORD or JFK? Or possibly LAX? I work for FedEx as a truck driver, but I love being out on the ramp near the jets. It's pretty cool to stand right there and watch an MD-11 taxi in right in front of you.
planes, trucks, trains, ships... I love 'em all!
Andy

Yea just being around an airport is a thrill for me (still!), from some of the smallest grass strips to taxing by the big jets on some of the busiest ramps is all neat.
Steve, my wife and I owned an '81 172P from '82 untill '93 and loved that thing, flew that darn thing everywhere from the Bahamas to PA and TX, very economical and with the long range tanks it seemed like it would go forever.
I've never flown any jets but have some King Air and Cheyenne time, I really like the King Air. My two favorites planes that I've flown are the Cessna Caravan and the Air Tractor AT-502 spray plane, (thats the one that pays the bills!). I've always told my wife if I ever struck gold I'd buy a Caravan on floats and head to Alaska, now that would be cool!

Rick,Andy, I work at DFW. We work an average of 4500 operations a day. A few years ago I got to take a ride with the Air Force in a T-38. We did everything that was required to put a pilot in training through. I got to feel 6+ g's. Now you talk about a rush, that was the most. Also got to do aerobatics in a T-6. Never got sick. Ha.

Steve, what a thrill that T-38 ride must have been! I have flown a couple of the T-6's and had fun with them, that 600hp radial engine (PW-1340) is the same one alot of the spray planes use... good engine but very old and thank God for turbines!
Having flown into DFW a few times, I may have spoke with you during the approach, but it's been about 6 years since I've been there.

Rick & others, glad to hear of more aviation lovers out there. I'm a PPSEL W/Instrument & a full time C-130 Flight Engineer. And I can't forget to mention I love my 1997 Dodge 2500 4x4 Club Cab. Keep that fuel burning!!! RAM1.

I was an Air Explorer in Boy Scouts, we flew a Cessna 182 to get our ratings. Too bad the Scouts dropped the Air program. I never followed up to get my license, but I started Hang Gliding in 1975 and flew till 82. It was great soaring 2000 ft above the Montana University golf course in Missoula and having a 737 1000 ft BELOW you on final to the airport. I gave it up when two of my best friends took that flight that you can't walk away from. (wife was a wreck every time I punched off the mountain) I would love to start flying again but I have too many toys now! Happy Rammin & flyin, Dave

Hey Rick, since you fly down in Vero you may be familiar with all the Sierra Alpha's that fly in. I went to Shields Aviation back in '89/90. Got my ticket, Multi, Comm, Inst. (land) but never could find work. I was a SH60B crewman in the navy in Mayport Fl. (HSL-40) but blew a knee out and used my severance pay to go to school. Great experience but never could find work (none that would pay rent AND food!!) So I don't fly anymore but miss it alot. It seems like dusting crops has got to be a rush! Just keep it out of the trees!

Does RC count for this group?
I fly aerobatic RC planes.
Figure I can do things with them, and no matter how bad I mess up trying to learn something new, I still get to go home.

I also work for a company that designs and manufactures avionics, both mil and commercial.

We have somesort of hardware flying on most newer (last 15 years or so) aircraft out there.

I'm not a pilot but I am a navigator on C130's for the US Coast Guard. I really enjoy the flying and seeing different parts of the world. I just got transferred to California but before that I was stationed in Kodiak Alaska where the flying was the best I have ever seen. Fantastic scenery and flight conditions that will keep you awake.

Looks like I'm in good company on this board, Commerical..... , I own a Piper Chieftain, and just finished restoring my Cessna 310D. It turned out pretty nice, I like the Garmin stack w/twin GNS430's.

Got my private ticket when I was in Air Force ROTC in 1970 @ OSU in Corvallis, OR.

About two weeks later I was flying a new retractable Piper Arrow, lost power just after take-off from my home field in Condon (Eastern Oregon) and stacked it up 150' short of the aux runway after trying to limp in on a long 270 degree turn - didn't want to risk a 180 with insufficient power, as you guys know more than a few people have died that way.

It was definitely one of those unwelcome interruptions in the "hours of boredom" though, I'll tell you that - no passengers, I ended up with a split lip but that's about it. Was able to set it down and stay upright at less than 50mph (BOTH airspeed and groundspeed, unfortunately) but it was totalled. After FAA investigation and a few gut-wrenching check rides it was officially listed as "engine failure, cause unknown" which was good for me, bad for the FBO who rented me the plane. These guys were real dandies - came over early the morning after the incident, took the wings off, loaded up the plane and booked it back to Corvallis. When the FAA investigators showed up later on Sunday I took them to the crash site and the plane was gone !!! Boy were they pi$$ed -

It's kind of an interesting story but too long to tell here - had to do with the spring-loaded override switch Piper had in the 85mph automatic "gear down" anti-lame duck system on the very first retractable Arrows.

Anyway, flew quite a bit from then until about the mid-80's but haven't flown much since - would like to, though.

Never been a pilot but love planes. Was on flight status for two years in Air Force in mid 60's on RC-130. We flew all over Europe and Northern Africa. I was a radar and navigation tech. Not much TACAN, VOR, ILS or surely no GPS over there so radar was very important.
Wife and I go to all air shows in 300 mile radius. Love Blue Angels and Thunderbirds. We just went to Blue Angels show in Pensacola this past week end. Also were some propellar aircraft there. Saw for the first time Kent Gorden flying an Extreme 300. Have seen Patty Wagstaff and Sean Tucker before and thought they couldn't be beat. I was wrong. Never saw a plane tumble end over end before.
My favorite is Thunderbirds in F-16's. To see a F-16 go from the deck to 30,000 feet with out after burner straight up is awsome. Of course burning 300 gallons of diesel( JP-5 ) a minute. If you llke power demo, see an air show. F-16 has the power of 10 times the horse power of starting line up at Indianapolis 500.

Rob, not a fun time knowing you are going in is it? I turned one over on it's lid last July in Minto, ND... was taking off for the last load of the day (ag-flying) on a very unimproved strip 2300 ft long, had 700ft of 20 ft wide concrete that ran downhill into a 1600ft dirt strip. Rained hard the day before and a very bad mud hole down on the departure end, been missing it all day.
Hit the hole just as the plane was starting to lift, yawed bad to the left and by the time I got it straight I hit the uphill side of the wheat field, momemtum, torque and speed turned it into an aileron roll and slapped hard upside down in the middle of the wheat field. Ouch! A few bruises and stictches, a very big black eye and a couple of brokes ribs and a totaled out $380k Air Tractor with a PT6-34... first ding in 16 years of flying.
Had to do a check ride with the FAA, which was alright but all during the check ride (in Orlando, Fl) the Inspector continually told me about the pitfalls of ag flying, why I shouldn't be doing it and basically said that we were all bums that flew outdated and non-maintained equipment... I guess if he considers a '94 $380k turbine powered airplane with a $30k GPS swathing system, flow control computer with 100 hour inpections out dated and non-maintained, he would have got a big kick out of some those old ragged-out Cherokee 6's and 210's I used to fly hauling bank checks!

Good luck on the Cessna 310. I drove a "G" model for a few years and except for the weak breaks it's a pure joy to fly. I was hooked on the 310 after Sky King traded in the "Banboo Bomber" for one. I still haven't gotten over Penny yet. #ad

Make sure you put fuel sensors in the wing panels. The 310 has a carry through wings and a leak would RUIN your day.

I still perfer the B-55. You just have to watch that aft loading carefully. 7,500 feet on one isn't bad.
