Any tricks to drilling chrome bumper?

Installed my back up sensor & mounted the sensors on my towing bracket for the time being ,not real happy with their location & thought of mounting them in the bumper like the new fords,& was wandering if there is a trick to prevent the chrome from chipping of flaking off whilst drilling,if indeed it has that tendency to do so. Never drilled chromed metal before. Thanks for any advice. Ian

It might be a good idea to place some heavy masking tape over the chrome area where you want to drill. I would center punch and drill very slowly starting with a small drill bit. You must remember to coat the indise of the drilled hole with a good paint such as Rustoleum re primer as you have now exposed the raw steel to the elements which will cause rust to form. Drilling

I never had any problem with the chrome peeling but I haven't drilled a bumper in a while. Just make a good impression with the center punch and of course if you are going to drill a hole larger than about 5/16th I would drill a pilot hole. bg
