Any way to get truck and RV to Alaska without going through Canada? Nothing against Canada except we never travel with out some . 357 cal protection.

Possible to ship from Washington to Alaska via UPS to FFL holder?

We've avoided going to Alaska because of this hurdle but we are planning a 4 week road trip / vacation. Same applies to gun unfreindly States too, no gun, no $$ spent in that state.

I also carry . 357 protection in the form of S&W. Recently 3 days after Katrina I took the 5th wheel on 20 through La, Missippi area and had a blowout on the trailer where I dropped the trailer and went into town to get a new tire. Left the wife and grandpa at the first exit on the side of the road. Handed the wife the . 357 and said, any problems shoot. Grandpa had some big eyes... .

I know you can bring a shotgun through Canada and I might comprimise on that form of protection.

I've, also, heard that you can bring a shotgun into Canada. But, I beleive, there is a fee of about $50. 00 for that privilege.

If you are worried about "human-type predators" in Canada, that is almost non-existant. Quite safe, up North. But, as you know, taking a handgun into Canada, illegally, can cause you way more problems than it's worth. They have no sense of humor about handguns.

I've heard that the Canadian Customs look VERY closely at vehicles with TX plates, also. They seem to think ALL Texans carry weapons. So, you may be more vulnerable, than most, to their scrutiny.

One other thing to check out is that, I've heard that you will need a Passport to get back into the US. I'm not 100% sure of this but, that's what I've heard.

You may want to check thewe things out before you go.

Do you have an address in Alaska ? I let my FFL go some yrs ago, and I'm not sure what the law is now , but this is a technacality , you need a dealer to send between people , but sending to yourself is not addressed in the law , so you win be default.
Other wise you mite want to repost with the heading , any FFLs in Alaska?

Five years ago I carried a shotgun thru Canada. We were thourghly searched at the border and during the search the inspector asked about guns and I told them I had a shotgun and my wife called from the outside " becareful, it's loaded" The agents then sternly told me that the ammo had to be stowed apart from the gun. I don't know about current law, maybe it has changed.

As to ferrying to Alaska - the drive thru Canada is fantastic - take it if at all possible. you won't be sorry.

I'm in the the Coast Guard, and I was Stationed in Ketchikan AK. Alaska has some beautiful county to see. If you don't want to drive thought Canada you can take the Alaska Marine Highway Which is a ferry system the leaves Bellingham Washington and will take you to any city along what they call the Inside Passage. If you are trying to get to the main land of ALaska like most people you want to go From Bellingham WA to Skagway AK. I have travel on the ferry system twice know. You can sees a lot of south east Alaska from the ship. Plus the Chief engineer on one of the Ship is a TDR member. If you want more info or advice send me a PM. You can bring a gun but no ammo. One of those they don't ask you don't tell leave it in your Truck or RV thing.

If you go thru Skagway you still have to go thru Canada to get to Alaska proper and they will check you out just like any othe port---been there done that.

I have to apologize; I may have jumped the gun a little. I look at my Alaska map and if you take the Alaska Marine Highway to Skagway AK you would have to drive about 1000 miles through Canada, but if you take the AMH to Haines AK you would have to drive about 700 miles through Canada. I was under the impression that you could drive from Haines to the rest of Alaska without drive through Canada. I guess my poto graghic memory let me down. If you do decide to go this web site can help with the import of a firearm into Canada.

Um, I know you Texan's love your guns, but don't you think this is a little ridiculous? You are willing to go through all this trouble and spend a bunch of money just to travel with your precious handgun? Is it really that important? Think about it, the only purpose of a handgun is to kill or injure people. They are totally ineffective for hunting other animals.

I enjoy hunting, I have been around guns all my life, and yes this even includes handguns. I will admit it is fun to shoot handguns, but I have no need or desire to carry one around with me at all times for "protection".

The best thing about travelling is seeing and experiencing stuff that is different from your home area. If your handgun is that important that you are going to limit yourself to gun friendly states only, you are really missing out on what your country, and the rest of the world has to offer.

Take apart in pieces and mail the pieces seperately? Have a gunsmith disassemble it, ship the pieces seperately, then have it reassembled when you get there.

Leave yours home, buy one when you get there.

Does seem like a good bit of trouble though.

My feelings exactly. It sounds like guns have made the original poster less secure instead of more secure.

In 2002 I went from VA to AK thur Canada with no gun and had no problem. Canada has alot to see and alot to offer. The Canadans on th ewestern side are really friendly folk and are neat traveling companions. We spent 2 months in Canada and Alaska and enjoyed it all. Wanting to return soon. So leane gun at home and don't worry and enjoy yourself. Nuf said

I've driven up and back from Alaska 5 times. Never had, or saw a need for a handgun on any of those trips. It's a fantastic trip, no matter how many times you make it. I wouldn't base it on whether I could carry a . 357, or not. A . 357 won't stop any of the wildlife you might encounter, (i. e. moose or bear), and 2-legged predators are virtually non-existent, once you get past the Canadian border. Enjoy the trip.

You guys have obviously never had to call 911 and wait on help to come. At our ranch in Texas it would take the sheriff about 60 minutes to show up if he drove 80mph plus. Too many people have faith that "help will come when needed, you just dial 911".

Dave, You are right-on. People that think 911 is the way to go have NEVER had to use it. The wife and I are going to AK with friends this summer. We have checked on Hand Guns. You can take one through Canada if you apply for a permit which costs $50. 00 Call 1-800-731-4000. But it is not worth the Hassle. TAKE THE ROTTWEILER instead.

Us Texans carry guns for protection of our family. When on a long trip and sleeping at a Rest Area (ect), it gives great peace of mind. Especially if you like to travel at night, on long desolute roads. (like me)

We don't have very many road side holdups/car jacks as we used to since we carry guns now, legally. And yes, if someone threatens my family I will kill or injure (if I miss).

As far as hunting, I go deer and hog hunting with my SW 357mag and a 6" barrel. (I carry a P99, 40sw for protection legally)

Last I checked, we have several counties that have a special season for handguns.

But then again, I wouldn't cancel my trip because of it.

Shotguns with buckshot work well also! :-laf
