I bought my truck in February, experience the downturn in MPG in mid-march (after 2,000 +/- miles) and now it is coming back up?

My story & question

I couldn't be happier with my mileage. I. ve put on 15K mi. since Dec28th. Mileages has gone up as engine brakes in. Getting 21. 5(+/- 1) lately. Have checked every tank manually since new and the computer has shown less than actual by 1mpg lately. I began putting a splash of Stanadyne in the tank and it seems to help a lot. I may quit for a few tanks to verify that. 90% empty/10% hauling 8000# enclosed. Hauling (obviously) affects mpg,but no long haul data available yet. From what I see the diff between 4x4 and 2x4 is about 3mpg. that seems like a lot to me.

Question: maybe someone that works on these things can explain how the computer calculates MPG. What kind of sencors are used and what criteria it uses to compute? Mine is more accurate than I expected.

Disclaimer: Older guy and drive like it.

preleeguy,

The overhead mileage display uses data from the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor(APPS) and the odometer to calculate the mileage. Since it doesn't actually use fuel flow, the mileage reading is an estimation.

For the most accurate miles per gallon, the old fashioned way averaged over a long period of time is best. I keep up with my fuel purchases with MS Excel on my computer and have a "running average" on MPG.
