I was just thinking about how bad I think the 3G's sound straight piped and I was wondering how much the factory turbo affected that. Does anybody have an aftermarket turbo and straight pipe? I would like to know if that helps the sound. I sure miss the sound of my straight 98.

HY35

the HY35 IS the reason your exhaust sounds the way it does. the stock 9cm2 exhaust housing works hard to suppress turbine whistle through the exhaust side. i have a banks and i started my truck prior to putting on the muffler and it sounded TERRIBLE (straight piped). so until you ditch the turbo, you are not going to be able to make an "improvement" on the sound of your rig.

That's what I thought. I wonder how much better it would sound with a HX40 or something like it. Will it give the same sound as the older trucks or is there something else in the engine design that prevents that?

I'm thinking that pilot injection has long changed the sound of a Cummins!

But!!

I can say one thing for sure, mine is basically straight piped and sounds better without the EZ.

I'm waiting to see what the Edge timing box has to offer and probably gonna do the injector/turbo thing from DD. I'm sure this all has an effect on sound which for me is important for some childish reason ... ... ... ..... but, most importantly I want to tow my various loads like nobodies business and sound good too Oo.

I believe it's a combination of the turbo, manifold and pilot injection. When I took my stock manifold off you could really see how poor the last 3 cylinders are set up, #4 and #5 are siamesed together with a perpendicular opening straight off to join #6 just before going into the turbo.
