I've been thinking about one of those rear step thingies. You know the ones that fit in the hitch reciever and looks like a nerf bar. I figure you could back up untill you feel the bump, and your rear bumper would be exactly 6 " away from whatever is behind you.

I prefer to be a polite driver and not put my hitch ball through someones grill while parallel parking or backing into a spot in a parking lot.
What I'm curious about is how wide of a spread does it cover. I once backed into a low boulder that was to the right of center and put a nice dent in my bumper on the right side. Another time I backed into a piece of railroad rail driven into the ground and sticking up only about 2 to 3 feet.
