I Know this is not a popular choice, but money is tight right now and I need a new torque converter. They offer one with a 400 RPM lower stall speed, and they call it heavy duty. Will this thing hold up to a little extra power, or is it a complete piece of junk? I can get one pretty cheap through a friend, but don't want to waste the time or money if someone else has already tried a PDQ and been completely unsatisfied. Is it even as good as a stocker? Does the 400 RPM lower stall speed help or hinder performance?

You'll see a bit more smoke from the tailpipe with a lower stall converter. This is due to the fact that the turbo hasn't spooled up yet. Lower stall converters have pros and cons. Pros include better MPG, possibly cooler trans temps when towing up hills and better lockup or compression braking when going down hill.

Cons would be turbo not spooled up completely causing slight power loss and more smoke. But hey, SMOKE IS A GOOD THING :p

IMHO...

Every aftermarket/OEM diesel TC should have a lower stall speed if they're worth their weight in dog manure.

The lower RPM characteristics of most diesels require a lower stall speed to help put the power to the ground. Chrysler put a complete POS TC in front of all the auto trannies... their primary objective is to make the transmission (hopefully) last through the warranty period.

They are not concerned if a large percentage of the power you are trying to put to the ground is going up in heat...

Remember, you get what you pay for. If the TC you're looking at is a LOT less money than what everyone else is offering, you have to stop and think about why it's cheaper.

If it's cheaper than everyone else and turns out to be a good product - you may have found the 'holy grail' of TCs and the rest of us would love to hear about it.
