Figure this would get better exposure here, not much 1st gen stuff in the towing forum.

Need to get a goose hooked up to my 93. Anybody put a B&W in theirs? I am trying to decide if it is worth the $360 for one or just make my own. If I make my own I will just be threading the ball in and out as needed.

The thing I don't like about B&Ws for the 93 and older trucks is the bolts that hold the hitch to the frame are drilled through the bed floor, hitch, and frame all at once to be bolted in.

For a lot of non BW or Popuphitch units, they are basically a 1/2" plate that is also bolted through the bed of the truckinto the frame crossmembers. then eyebolts are used for the safety chains. If you bolt through where the low spots in the bottom of the bed are, it will minimize issues of using the bed for other work (loading flat stuff, etc. ). Bw's are spendy for sure, maybe you can find something on ebay?

I had the same problem. Hard to justify the price for something I use maybe once a month at the most. I welded a 3/4 plate from rail to rail with the nut welded to it. Now I can screw in my gooseneck ball when needed and still have a flat floor when I don't. I did have to raise the bed to accomodate the plate but now the body lines match even better than before! I had a local welder do it for $150, he's done many over the years.

I like my B&W turnover ball, easy install and works great plus has the option of the champion 5th wheel mount is another main reason I got it. I got mine 2 years ago for about $249 plus shipping, just looked at ebay and they have them for $299 plus shipping. Ofcourse I have a 2nd gen
