Website for Cool Collar

New price for Rotella

you can still purchase the amalgamated in 55 gallon drum(s) A few nw bombers purchased a drum a split it up. shipping is expensve

I bought a 5 gallon bucket in October of 2003 and will be needing a resupply soon. At that time, with UPS shipping, it was $90. 00 for the TDR "blend. " As far as I know they still will ship 5 gallon buckets. Their web page is www.amalgamatedinc.com and phone number is 260-489-2549. The item code on the invoice I got is TDR-PremW5.

I also bought a 5 gal bucket about 9 months ago, still going strong. Shipping was about as much as the additive, from what I remember about $90 total sounds right. Good customer service, I mailed them a check and had the brown truck at my door a little over a week later.

Well I got a hold of Gary Pipenger via email and he sent me the following reply in response to my inquiry and questions. Thought I would post it for others to see as well. I went to their website and could not find the test results of their comparisions to other well known products. I do remember that it stirred quite a few feathers because some of the well knowns didnt stack up to well. Maybe it was just in the TDR mag that had the test published but I thought I remembered reading more in depth info on their site about it. Anyway this TDR blend is really the only retail they have ever done.

90. 00 divided by 1875 gallons = . 048 cents per gallon to use.

Dear Barry:

The TDR 21665-15 additive (ref. TDR article) is a "complete year-round

additive" with 652ptb of cetane improver to yield 6+ numbers increase

(this is considerably more increase than any other premium diesel fuel

additive product). Our additive also has a full Cummins L-10 detergency

rating PLUS existing deposit clean up capabilities, lubricity

enhancement for 5000+ SLBOCLE & less than 400um HFRR lubricity rating,

storage stability for 12 months, NACE 1-A corrosion rating, and combustion

deposit modifiers to prevent buildup. AND, this additive is winterized to lower

the CFPP by 25 Degrees F or more, reduce the Pour Point by 35 Degrees F

or more and De-Ice moisture to -40F or more for typical water amounts.

There is nothing more that can be put into an additive package, and this additive

can be used all year long.

The additive treats at 1:375 (1 gallon per each 375 gallons of fuel) or

1 pint per each 47 gallons of fuel and you do not have to worry about

overtreating. If you want more cetane improvement or better

winterization, you can increase the dosage and no harm will be

encountered.

We are making the additive available in 5-gallon cans at $90. 00 each

(includes $50. 00 for the additive and $40. 00 for shipping and handling)

if you send us a check (no credit cards). Send your check to:

AMALGAMATED, INC. , P. O. Box 8977, Fort Wayne, IN. 46898. We will make

shipment to you within 3 to 5 business days from receipt of your check.

You may save shipping, if you want to pick up the additive, give us 1 or

2 days notice before so we can have it ready for you.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Best regards,

Gary Pipenger

Barry,

That's . 048 dollars (4. 8 cents) per gallon.

So does it work at the recommended dosage?

I live just north of Amalgamated and had the chance to stop by and save the shipping cost. I picked up 2 5gal pails and have used it for months now. I have to admit that after driving for awhile it's hard to tell a difference from what it use to be like untreated. But I know that with a little extra effort at the pump I can address the lubricity and detergent requirements of my beloved Cummins and increase the Cetene to close to 50. With my Filtering FASS and Amalgamated additive, I feel like I've covered these bases.

My cost for the quantity of each chemical to achieve the desired results (TDR Formula w/o shipping) is 2. 7c a gallon. Gary doesn't try to cut that to 2. 5c or 2. 3c or anything else. This is what it takes to produce a diesel additive to improve fuel characteristics to these levels of Cetane, Lubricity, Detergency - ect.

Amalgamated is a small company that is proud of a quality product and Gary P. is extensively published on articles on diesel fuel quality/characteristics. Integrity and Experience and of course, hard numbers sold me.

I havent used it for a while. I used to get some from a guy who bought the pails and have since lost contact with him. I was in the store the other day grabbing a bottle of PS and suddenly remembered. I really liked it when I was using it. I did not notice any huge increase in mileage. It ran a bit quieter and did smoke less at the recommended dosage. However at the time there was a station that I used that sold 50 cetane fuel. It has since been bought out and they took the 50 cetane rating off the pump so now I may notice an increase in mileage we will see. What I liked best about it was it had everything in it to make real premium diesel fuel. Instead of the pump stuff that says it is premium which means it only has to meet 2 of 5 criteria and which two is anybodies guess. Since at least here in Colorado they dont have to post it on the pump. Unless it has a cetane rating posted which is up to the stations discretion then you do not know what it is. And since the stations dont post the cetane rating or at least very very few that tells me they cant count on the consistency or they buy whatever is cheapest. I will try to dig up the article in the TDR it was several years ago. Somewhere there was an independent test comparing some of the big names you see in the stores to Amalgamated and most did not even come close and if I remember none were better. They do not normally sell retail they sell to the fuel depots and carriers as well as other wholesale fuel suppliers.

Guys, you should probably take my addition here with a grain of salt the size of a salt lick, but here it is anyway. At May Madness, 2003 I dyno'd my truck at ~517 hp (when the turbo blew, but that's another story, and it was after peak hp. ). At May Madness 2004, using the Amalgamated (and a Switzer turbo of similar size as the Holset) the number was 523 hp. Lots of variables, granted, but these are the only numbers I've seen posted with no other changes to the engine, and I'm ashamed to have to qualify them with a years worth of time between runs.

Well last night after I got home from work I rumaged through the TDR mags and found the article about it. Then something more important came up and didnt get a chance to post what I found. The article is very good and extremely informative it was in one of the 02 mags. The independent test results were in the article and they were astounding to say the least. Most of the over the counter products didnt do much at all for cetane. For example the Power Service with cetane improver only improved the cetane by . 6 (less than one point) verses 6 points for the amalgamated. If anyone has that mag I would highly recommend rereading it.

Ever since reading that TDR article I have been an avid Amalgamated user. I've tried several brands of additive in my '01 HO and was hard pressed to tell if they did anything at all. The Amalgamated made the most noticeable difference so I felt it was good stuff. I always use it on my 12-valve and notice an improvement too.

If you ever wander over to the 3rd Gen forums there have been a couple of threads discussing fuel lubricity and pump failures, and the truth of the matter is with emission requirements and reduced sulpher our pump diesel has inadequate lubricity. I think any good additive is better than nothing when it comes to enhancing lubricity (as long as lubricity is one of the additive's features).
