Be Careful on the Road - Look Out for the Other Guy!

My brother-in-law has an Armalite. Other than shooting it a few times, I don't have much experience with it. Nice piece though.

Ok once we bring on some others we will get in discussion. I am dialed in to 100 yds and barrel is broke in . Have shot out to 650 yds with fairly good accuracy. Have done some hand loads and am ready for the next phase.

in at 100 seems short. my understanding is they are better if zeroed at 300.
i'll get mine set up sometime next month. deer season opens friday for me. so sometime after the 4th i'll be doin some sighting in.

Have some Creedmore dies stretched out that .223 nicely

I built a 6.5 Grendel, it's a nice upgrade in the small format.
Youtube has a bunch of vids of guys whacking plates etc @ 1000 and 1000+ yds with the Grendel. That's more than I'd ever need.:D
Longest range around here is only 300 or so yds w/o a couple hour drive.

Patriot pretty nasty cartridge. Too bad you have to drive so far.

Big care to share your recipe on your loads that work well?

Gail & I are in the barn hay loft, waiting for whatever has been after the chickens and pigs. He shot 5 Coyotes out of 7 that made the chickens get squirely last night. He said that he'll get the information you asked for but doesn't like to quote loads off the top of his head for safety reasons. The cases that he uses for general plinking & predator control are used military. The bullets are Remington 150 gr SP that he buys in bulk boxes of 2,000 for general shooting & trigger time. RL-15 but perfers. IMR 4320 because at least in the military cases it's better accuracy and pressure signs are less.

Penny & Gail

150 Remington SP on top of 47.8 gr of IMR 4320 a shade under 2800 fps
Winchester primer, everything is stuffed in a Military surplus case or some Remington & Winchester brass, I'm not going to use some fancy brass in a weapon notoriously hard on Brass I save that for the bolt guns.

I don't know what to tell you about accuracy, I can consistently hit a 10" plate at 400 yards plenty good enough for poking holes in predators. I don't shoot from a bench with any of my AR's that's not the intended purpose of the AR's IMO. Multiple targets running like Hell after the first shot is where they excel.

I like the 150's and have played a little with 168 & 180 gr bullets but again, I like the performance of the 150's its NOT a round that I would use if I'm pelt hunting its really chews up hide. I use the 308 around the house to get rid of predators that's its main purpose in life.

a little off subject

Penny & I go Pelt hunting she carries an AR in 223 and a Rem 700 that was originally a Varmint Special in 223 when the barrel was shot out it was made into a 20 Practical an excellent Pelt Hunting round.
I carry a AR in 223 & a Rem 700 in 243 for larger predators or when they think they are out of range and laughing at me.

all of the bolt guns wear Lilja barrels from Plains MT & I use a Gunsmith that's the Yoda for Gunsmiths IMO

Happy Shooting :D

Big thanks for the scoop . Sounds like you guys have fun up there. I have hand loaded 175 sierra match with IMR 3031 .Started hand loads at the low end and did five rounds in increments of .5 grain till I reached the high end. Trying to find the sweet spot

In my experience the "sweet spot" is just less than max sometimes by 1.5 gr. Sometimes with. 5. Try different components it's amazing how much difference they make. With the AR'S I'm not that picky because of their use. Bolt guns need lots of trial & error to get them dialed in.

Good Shooting
