Alright, guys. I loaned my truck to a friend for about 10 days, who drove from St. Louis to Denver and pulled a trailer back, pretty light by anyone's standards. When I got in the truck today (just looked at the outside last night when returned) I noticed the gear shift pattern on the knob is totally sideways. I can turn it counter-clockwise to make the pattern accurate but then the lever itself isn't tight at the base anymore, like leaving a screw loose and doesn't feel right. Anybody else have this problem?Answers/suggestions?Thanks in advance. Steve W.

Its probably just the "ball or knob" thats loose. There should be a jam nut at the base of the knob.

Seeing you have a 2001, your "stick" should thread on to the top of your transmission. At that point it has a jam nut that may be loose. Remove the boot to get at it.

HEMI and CPFF; It's definitely not the knob, it's the whole stick going into the transmission. Sounds like pulling the boot and tightening the bolt underneath is the likely solution. I'll wait till morning when i'll have more light and give it a shot. Thanks guys. I'll post the results.

I've got the same deal. It doesn't seem to be the whole knob that's rotating. It's the little part in the center that has the patern on it. Mine has rotated 90deg, it just looks funky, the Line-X dealer couldn't find rev using the modded pattern #ad
If you find a fix please post it.

On my '95 the center part with the numbers just pops out and will go back in any way you want. I changed mine for one that reads 12345 instead of L234O,Dodge part.

Metal tech,
Your problem is different from sagwagons. You can easily pry out the the round shift patter from the knob with a very small screwdriver, align it how you want, and push it back into place.

Sagwagons' shift lever came loose from the trans itself. All he had to do is remove the shift boot and tighten the lever at the base.

On mine the number button turns... Had the dealer "fix" it a coulple of times then I put a drop of SUPER Super Glue on two sides of the button.....

MikeR, thanks for the info, it did help. I used a piece of dense foam to put pressure between the button and the threaded shaft holding the knob on. I took my Sunday drive and it didn't move at all, nice fix.

You can take a good grip of the shift knob by hand then unscrew it. Pop the cap off with a screw driver from the inside of the knob. This keeps you from getting pry marks on the shift knob itself. Re- install your shift knob then apply a "little" rubber silicone to the groove that the cap sits in and reinstall the cap. that should get that darn thing to stay put. I would like to figure out how to replace that cap and make it into a switch for air horns. Of course this doesen't help with the original post but it may help those with spinning shifter caps. Mine made a full revolution every 2 weeks and was back in alignment for a day. #ad

Just wanted to provide info... . CPFF and MikeR; You were right in that the dealer pulled the boot and tightened a nut at the base of the stick. Now, the shift pattern is 'right' in regards to how it is displayed on the knob and the stick no longer rotates. Figured I'd just let them deal with it under warranty. Good call, guys!
