Well this christmas I got a real interesting gift (at least to me) it was a jar of honey bought from a local honey producer.

The quart sized mason jar that the honey came in has 2 large pieces of actual honeycomb inside.

I have already broken off small pieces and consumed them and chewed up the wax and spit that part out.

Just wondered if anyone else ever had this stuff?

I did when I was a kid. Our neighbor was a bee keeper. Spent many hours watching and playing with the smoke can :-laf

Yes, I have eaten the honeycomb. It is hard to describe to people about it. You must try it!

Did you like it? I didn't care for it, being older might be a different story now.

Having grown up around this stuff (my Dad was a commercial beekeeper) oneycomb is nothing more than pure beeswax. It is indigestible and will simply pass through your digestive system if you know what I mean. It will neither harm you or benefit you in any way. I used to chew the stuff for the honey and then spit it out.

I've been buying honey from small or local producers over the last couple of years. Man, the stuff on the grocery store shelves just can't compete with the varietals. I also worked a summer for a beekeeper, primarily gathering supers and spinning the honey out.

once in a while the local guy sucks, we tried a local bee keeper a couple times and that honey was NASTY, i think the bees were buzzing a outhouse sucking on turds instead of flowers, i gave it to my uncle in out of state to try and he thought it sucked too wound up putting it down in the woods for the bears

we always buy local honey ... supposed to help with hayfever, old wives tale but it has helped us

almost always has the comb ...

the kids think the wife and i are nuts ... we always try to eat the comb before the other can get it

Yeah, it's not too bad... just wicked sweet. I prefer real maple syrup if I'm gonna go into sugar shock :D . My dad used to be a beekeeper, I have to say I hated extracting honey since it is one of the messiest jobs out there. Honey is naturally hypoallergenic and has quite a few nutrients in it when it is straight from the comb you don't get from extracted honey (most of the stuff you see in stores is from China, as well). Try royal jelly if you want to try a bee product that's really tastes odd!

I have tried it a couple times. My buddies family is in 4H and on top of raising sheep, chickens and turkey's he himself has three hives of honey bees. As others have stated it is real sweet, kind of hard to describe though. I didn't mind it but its not somthing I would eat all the time.
