Lana and I are going to Gold Beach, Oregon to go crabbing. Never been crabbing. Been to Gold Beach, for many, many years, just never been crabbing. Been accused of being crabby, oh wait, that's another story.

Any body got any tips, ideas?

TIA, Stranger.

Be sure and check the website of the controlling authority in the area where you are thinking of going for possible closures. Many of the areas in Washington have been closed for crabbing for the past couple of months due to over-harvesting (supposedly).

Crabbin'

Hi Stranger;

My wife Jo, and I went crabbing in Winchester Bay for the first time last year. At first we used fish remainbs from a local fish market and did'nt do too good. Then we noticed a Lady hauling in the crab. We asked what she was using for bait and she told us turkeu legs. Well we got some and tried it and by darn it worked just fine. Had a large pot with us and boiled up a batch. Don't use sea water, as some people tell ya. Use fresh and get some of that crab boil mix you can find in the local markets. Boil as per directions and turn off the heat and add a couple tbsp of vinigar and let it stand until nearly cool. The vinigar helps release the meat from the shell and makes shelling a lot easier. It took eleven crab to make a pound of meat but had a lot of fun gabbin and shellin.

Have fun, JIMNJO

Hey there stranger. Since you travel to Gold Beach, Oregon, consider this. By traveling another half day north on 101, you could RV in Netarts, Oregon. There is an RV park right on this pristine bay (Netarts Bay RV park). The neat thing is that they have a small boat basin right in the RV park and rent boats for crabbing. They proivide all of the gear. Months with "R" in them are the best months for crabbing here in Oregon. September, as you know, is the absolute best month for the Oregon Coast for crabbing and sunsets. This is a nice RV park. Netarts Bay is very well protected and has a nice public boat launch about a half mile from the RV park if you want to bring your own boat. There are no salmon runs in this bay, so there is no commerical boat basin. The clamming is also great during low tides. Netarts bay is just south of Tillamook, Oregon. P. M. me if you get serious about checking this out and I will also send you info re: my "perch hole" (fish from the bank) down from the RV park.

Well, down here, where it's Hot and Humid, we've always used Chicken Necks. Those Blue Crabs would hit them hard and fast. Not sure if it would work out West, or even if you can find chicken necks out there, sounds like a "Southern" thing to me.

I have been crabbing a few times, but allways with someone who knew what they were doing??, so I never bothered learning much about it.

In the bay at Coos Bay, we did shallow water crabbing and caught quite a few.

Here in Port Orford, there really is no bay and the crabbing was done in pretty deep open water.

Both places we used fish "parts"

Here in Port Orford there is qute a bit of commercial crabbing but that is done winter time and you have to really want to be out there to tollerate the seas.

go with the turkey leg or chicken necks, but find a nice long pier to drop the cage if you dont have a boat :) and dont forget the rope

enjoy :)

For the most fun, just use a string line with a chicken neck tied to it. Stake a few of them out and wait till the lines get taught. Then the fun part begins. Get a long handle scoop net and put it in the water and ease the crabs in above the net. Then pick the net up. Takes a little finesse but you'll catch on . Hope you catch enough for a boil. ;)

If turkey legs or fish parts are not avail, just poke some holes in a sardine can and fasten that to your trap. If you dont't have trap a simple set up can be made with a bicycle rim and some net, but this system is meant to be used off a peir and pulled up periodically to check for crabs?

Crabbin

Hey there crabber,

In calif. there are alot of great places to crab and not too far out either. One of the places I had great success was a place called capitola. That is just south of santa cruz. Throw your nets just outside of the kelp beds and cha ching! As far a bait, fish heads cats and dogs that you don't love anymore will do and..... lots of shops for th lady. hm I might go back

Good crabbin. PW;)
