I was told by the service manager of Cummins Rocky Mountain that Cummins does not do any warranty engine work for the Cummins equipped Dodge. The Dodge dealership must do all warranty work including internal engine work or even tear-downs and rebuilds. This is coming from the mouth of a Cummins service manager who told me that what I had done to the fuel injection pump on the 1990 I used to have was illegal(slightly turned up the fuel) and I have to pay them to turn it down. This sounds a little like bull-arky to me; anyone had any experiences that prove otherwise?

I was told by Cummins that I had to initally take it to DC and they had to refer it to Cummins. I'm not sure if that still applies after the inital 3/36 or not.

About a year ago, I was talking to the owner of a Dodge dealership and he told me that they send the Dodge diesels to Cummins, for warranty work. Cummins bills the Dodge dealer and the dealer does the paperwork they have to do, just like they do when they do the work and Cummins name never comes up.

I stopped at the San Antonio Cummins dealer (Southern Plains, I think) a few years ago and asked about warranty work on a Ram. Answer was NO!

110,000 miles and counting.

Dodge buys the warranty along with the engines from Cummins, so the engines are pretty much out of their hands when they roll out the door.

I've seen posts in the past where D/C shops unsuccessfully diagnose or repair engine related problems and then the owner was able to get a purchase order from the dealer to take to Cummins and have them fix it right. It wasn't an easy task to get the dealer to cough up a PO for Cummins though #ad

Vaughn, this may help you if you ever need warranty work. The Dodge dealer in Yakima sends all it's warranty and non-warranty work on diesels out to Cummins NW in Yakima. At least they did two years ago unless things have changed. They worked on my '95s twice while under warranty, paper work went though Dodge. Cummins NW is an excellent outfit.

joesoot,
Vaughns' post is correct... Dodge provides the warranty on the engine not Cummins,so they have the say on who fixes it.

Illflem,
Same kinda thing here. Lynnwood Dodge and Puget Sound Dodge don't have diesel techs,so they both send out their work. All the other dealers keep it in-house.

Cummins CAN do warranty work. The only trouble is you have to get DC to agree to it first. It can be done. That is what I was told by Cummins North in Duluth, MN.

Joe,

The guys are right, Dodge can send it to Cummins but they have to approve it first.

As for the idiot telling you that you HAVE to turn down your pump, he's full of crap--depending on when you had your truck in their, that may have been his way of telling you you violated EPA rules. However, once the truck (engine) is outta warranty, Cummins can and does do things to our engines. I'm not up on the EPA rules, but apparently when engine isn't covered by them any longer Cummins will do certain things to your truck. I love these guys that say we HAVE to do something. What happens if I don't? He'd better have lots of friends and they'd better be packin iron... ... . #ad

My dealership sends me to my local cummins shop for all warranty work. Great shop great dealership. #ad

The fuel injection pump on my 1995 failed several years ago. The truck was towed to the Dodge dealership that sold the truck. They had it towed to Cummins Cincinnati where the work was performed.

The system works as stated here. Your warranty starts with Dodge, so you have to contact them first. The dealership may have Cummins do the work for any number of reasons. The dealership may not have a qualified diesel mechanic, or that mechanic may be busy with a different job. It may be cheaper for Dodge to contract the work out rather than do it in-house. Also, it may be that Cummins is paying Dodge for the warranty work and it's simpler for Dodge just to deliver the truck to Cummins and let them do it.

In my case, I got a brand new injection pump plus a tune-up from Cummins. The truck's replacement pump was set up better than the factory one, either with better timing or more fuel flow or both. My mileage improved after the replacement. I was very happy with the work.

What you have to do is buy your truck and/or get it serviced by a dealership that is hooked up to the TDR! My dealership(Swift Auto World, Sacramento) reads the TDR Mag and also sells and installs the Speedway box(Van Aakan)on any Dodge Ram Diesels if you want one. #ad
