www.roadranger.com/csee/MungoBlobs/trsl0157-0203.pdf#search='Fuller%20T/TX14607B' It seams to me that this would be a sweet set up for a guy that tows heavy with a 2wd 3500. I love my engine, somewhat like the truck, and hate the transmission. I have a race car trailer that will gross somewhere between 25k and 28k loaded. The truck has an exhaust brake and the trailer brakes are EXCELLENT. The truck runs and pulls the trailer great with only 2 problems. #1: There is pretty bad chatter when tacking off, (axle wrap and clutch chatter). #2: I can't seam to keep transmissions in the thing. Otherwise it tows GREAT. PLEASE DON'T TELL ME ALL THE LEGAL MUMBO-JUMBO ABOUT TOWING THIS HEAVY... ... I KNOW..... I KNOW... BUT THIS ISN'T ABOUT THAT. After doing a little research, I've come to the conclusion that the only trucks I could find that would tow approx 30k (or is rated to do so) are the F750 Fords and the 7500 Kodiac and Top Kicks. That's ridicules that an F-550 and 5500 Top Kick can't tow much more than a dually. But the funny thing is that the main differance in the larger trucks are in transmissions. So I conclude that if I fix the weak link, being the transmission, and POSSIBLY change to a larger rear-end that I can RELIABLY tow 28k lbs with no major mechanical issues. The additional first gear ratio would be great at getting the weight moving and probability help the start chatter issue. Any Input is welcome as long as the words "Insurance", "Liability", "Sue", "D. O. T", "Ticket", and "Safety" are not used ;)

I think this would solve the reliability issue and make a bullet resistant set up.

Thanks for the input,

The transmission with the 9. 24 1st gear ratio and . 75 7th gear ratio sounds the best. Ultra low 1st gear to get the load moving and a similiar cruising ratio to what you have now in the 5 speed, and a nice even spread in between.
