My brother's new 2006 MC with only 588 miles on it threw a P0116 code this morning. The code list states that it is a coolant temp sensor. I was wondering if anyone here has had that code before and what caused it. The dealer's going to look at it on Tuesday and it will haopefully be a quick, easy fix. It sure is disappointing to have a Check Engine Light on at 588 miles. :(

Tell your brother to not bother going in for the temp sensor rationality fault. This is an erroneous code and as of this time there is no fix. I think DC is working on a flash to widen the parameters before the fault sets. Unfortunately the CARB and EPA regulations from the gas side are starting to creep into the diesel world. The code usually sets when you start it cold after a cool night, and the truck is in the sun for a while before you start it. The large mass of the engine remains cool, while the battery and intake temp sensors are starting to warm up. If all three are not within 8 degrees of each other the code sets. I think it clears after two good trips (cold starts), but in any case the dealer will be instructed to clear the code and ship the truck. I recommend that the customer pull the codes from the odometer, and if it is P0116 to ignore it and it will go off by itself in a couple of days.

Thanks for the response sag2. I'm curious if this is something unique to the '06 or all 3rd gens. I've never seen the code on my '04. 5 600 nor did my brother ever see the code on his '03 555. Is it just a coincidence that all the conditions just happened to be right this time to set the code? Is there any other possibility that it could be something else? Thanks again.

Mine set a code yesterday morning after a cool night. The truck was sitting in the hot sun as mentioned. I didn't get the code number, we were going to the dealer anyway and they erased it for me. I also never had this on my '05 which was operated under the same conditions many times. My truck had less than 100 miles on it  Not too concerned though, the truck runs fine, no obvious problems.

Brother said his Check Engine Light went off yesterday and the code hasn't come back. I'm thinking that the parameters are different for '06, hence not seeing the code set on the earlier model trucks. Can anyone confirm this?

My 04. 5 throws the code about once a month. Stays on for a day or two and goes out. Not worth the effort to go to the dealer to get it erased and have it come back on in a week.

Doesn't affect how the truck runs so who cares. Ignore it just like all those pesky red traffic lights. :D
