Has anyone out there had any problems with the Ez for the '03, a buddy is having a problem and I am wondering if it's just the truck. The ez set on 4 pretty often the truck makes a poping noise from the front left fender area and he say's it also puts out a cloud of smoke when it pops. Does it less on levels 1,2,3 and not at all with the Ez unpluged. What gives? truck runs great till the noise, he say's almost like a backfire?

Thanks Jared

popping noise

my truck has made that popping noise 3 times sounds like a pop or i ran over a cardboard box did it cold 2 or 3 min after start up other 2 times fully warmed up cruisin at 55 no miss shake or shudder just that pop has not done it for a week or 2 i don't think its the ez but who knows truck runs starts fine and i'm gettin 24 mpg any one else got the pop? chime in

Sounds to me like you guys are going to need new injectors soon. Remember with the edge installed now, "I am my own warranty station"

Make sure your buddy has an EGT gage installed or he will probably melt #6 also. The EGT Gage should always be the first "BOMB" to the truck if you don't believe me check out the 911 section.

The truck is a reg. output auto and it is unloaded 90% of the time and has been since the problems. Any more ideas or other experiences?

Why would he need new injectors?

That's what I was wondering. I was going to spring for a new EZ, but if you guys are having issues I will hold off for a while to be safe. Has anybody tried the predator?

I'm not sure what he is saying either, but we are not sure if it is the Ez or the truck itself. Going to put it on a buddies H. O. 6spd and try to get it to duplicate. He has a PDQ 3 position flip chip in it stock-60-100 hp and it runs pretty good. I guess it is timing also since it plugs into the cam sensor and the crank sensor, along with the same plugs as the Ez. Can they be STACKED?:D Any other suggestions.

Thanks Jared

The edge is producing higher fuel pressure and pushing more fuel through the injectors. The "Popping" sound is in line with what I have been hearing about common rail injection and injectors failing. When you chip the truck you work the injectors much harder than the factory stock option. That is how you get all the extra ponies. Everyone I know that "BOMBS" the mighty Cummins sooner or later has an injector upgrade in there future, some sooner than others.

Ford has pushed so much out of there new 6. 0L they have had masses injector failures on even the stock version, and guess what many here "POPPING" before the change. Before you flame me yes I know the Ford R&D really screwed the big one.

I am no expert on BOMBING but there is a cause and effect for power I have been around long enough to understand that much. ;)

Have a friend with a 03 2500 H. O. 373 gear auto. Now has 12k on it. When it had about 2500 miles he towed with it the first time and comminted that it made a big POP noise like a intake backfire! Only did it once and so far not again. Its STOCK.

i don't think it's the ez 1st it don't sound like it's comming from the motor left side under hood 2nd it did it twice at 55- 60 running for more than hours then 2 min after start up 20-30 mph truck has 7. 000 miles i put the ez in at dealer when i picked it up maybe i'll call evan

Another thought, I know it isn't on the left. But what about the turbo bark deal. I know I can make mine bark pretty easy with the Edge on 4 if I am not careful

i don't think its the ez (or don't want to belive it) it's a strange sound like hitting cardboard box or defrost/vaccum operated vent door slaming shut also i had this same ez in my 03 dauley with 8,000 miles no noise:confused:

Since it seems to be not a constant popping and more like a pop every now and then, I feel that it is the turbo barking.

The last two TDR's have talked about this very point. Issue 40 page 63. Issue 41 page 23.

Issue 41 goes into great deal about turbo's and fueling.

The residual boost air is running backword through the turbo. "Occasionally, it succeeds in breaking the end of the shaft, and the compress wheel falls off" Mark Chapple

Basically it is caused from "forces from instaneous acceleration and deceleration events". Seems the noise is more noticed in the new 3rd generation trucks because they are very quiet running and you can hear the huff-huff better.

my 94,01, 02, all barked but was a different sound i drive big trucks for a living know the differance between a bark and a pop all 3 times there was no on off throttel to cause a bark maybe it will be like my wife and go away

wonder what sound the pressure relief valve on the common rail is going to sound like if it should need to open.

I doubt if you'd ever hear it. It would just be a bypass back to the tank like the overflow valve on a 7100 pump. It just bypasses a little fuel back to the tank.

As mentioned in another thread, the EZ does not give the rail or the injectors more pressure than they can handle, it simply gives them a little more pressure for the throttle possition they are running at. Except under hard acceloration or pulls, they would run the same fuel flow and pressure as stock.
