Boost Pressure Sender Accuracy

My truck, at 61000 miles quit the other day. Todd at T&C Diesel called me on a Sunday(!) at 7:30 AM to talk me through the troubleshooting. It wasn't the FCA, or the low pressure pump, or the rail pressure relief. No fuel getting from CP3 to the rail while cranking.

This all made me think. How often do these things go out? Truck is maintained properly, I never increased my rail pressure via Smarty, so what gives?

I've read many posts with failing FCAs, pressure reliefs, but never a bad CP3. It happened while pulling out of my driveway gently, truck coughed, then died! Cranks over, no fuel getting to rail, but plenty getting to CP3. Disconnected plug to FCA, wouldn't start. Disconnected rail pressure sensor and tapped the relief valve area. Still nothing.

Bottom line, a new stage 1 CP3 is in the mail, and will be installed by the end of the week. I'm also springing for the "wild" fuel rail upgrade. I'll keep you posted on my findings.

Since I'm typing, I would like to get something off my chest, if I may. I've been posting for quite a while, and try to offer sensible advice to those in need of educated input. When my truck just "quit" on Saturday AM, I posted on this forum, asking for help. I even "bumped" the thread to keep it alive and in the open for people to see. I got ONE response! Apparently, people aren't interested in helping fellow TDR members???

Perhaps I should have titled my post something like "I'm thinking about buying a Ford". THAT would have gotten about 500 responses by noon!!!

Thankfully, Todd talked me through the diagnosis over the phone Sunday AM, and will get me what I need quickly.

After rebuilding my 03 engine and having had it running several times, as I was about to back it out of the shop, it just died and although it would crank, it would not start at all. We spent hours checking over everything but could find nothing wrong. I ended up hauling it to Dodge ( where I know the people ) and the tech said it wasn't getting enough fuel pressure to the rail. He said it was the CP3. It was of the few thing I didn't replace as they are generally not a problem part. I sent him a good used one that I had and it has been running fine since. I have a brand new one to go on when I get time. Shadrach

It is pretty rare for a CP-3 to go out. It's good that someone was able to walk you through the diagnosis over the phone.

What are your plans for the old CP-3?

They Leak generally before quiting,The Gear pump keys brake often,I I think thats what happen to MC Pump. To clarify He purchase stg 1 T&C reman.

Sorry no one answered, I know how that goes (happened to me one time) but sometimes we just don't have the rite people on here to answere a question. Please do keep us informed of your new pump and rail performance. I'm very interested in these kind of mods.

Cheers,

Scotty

had a CP3 go on me once at aprox 70,000KM. very low on power. would start ok. changed FCA no change and pressure relief no change. ran on dyno only 140hp at wheels with chip on and off. checked rail pressure 9000psi is all it would put out. Dodge changed and warrantied pump.

You'll notice that the weekend's have the least amount of traffic on the boards... Sat AM is probably the worst timing you could have had, if waiting for a quick response. I suppose guy's are out doing stuff. . it is afterall, the wknd! Don't get discouraged!. . just one of those things;) FWIW

Wow I am not sure how I missed your plea for help over the weekend. Although my first guess would have been lift pump so I would not have been a lot of help. Free advice is free for a reason.

I'm OK now, thanks. I've taken my meds! :-laf

Truck will be back on the road by Friday. I did have an interesting discovery, though. Because I didn't have my truck to move our trailers around, I ended up having to use our old, '99 GMC van with a 5. 0 gas engine. I am surprised to admit that it actually towed our trailers just fine! Go figure. And I also checked fuel mileage that day, 12. 8 mpg! That is only a little less than what I would have gotten with my truck, 15 ish, since half the day was loaded, half the day empty and on the highway. Trailers were #7400, and #8500.

Hey Todd, I got your message, but I'm camping now and reception is spotty. How the heck did that pump shaft snap!?! Is that uncommon? I've never raised rail pressure above stock, so what do you think?
Thanks,
Mark

But what would cause the gears to lock up? Not enough lubricity? Wear over time? I should be getting my oil analysis back any day from Blackstone. I'm curious if anything will show up. 10,000 miles on Mobil One Delvac 5w40. We'll see...

So what causes that? I use B5 Bio diesel 100% od the time, and power service (grey bottle) pretty consistently. I should have no lubricity issues. My fuel filter was fairly black, but not slimy and had 10,000 miles on it. Any thoughts?
Thanks for the pics, Todd.

Oh, and since the cases are scuffed, do you think I got any of that schmutz in my injectors? I ask, because since the CP3 swap/breakdown incident, my truck is definitely louder, like a rattle. I noticed it, and my wife asked why my truck was so loud when I got home. She said she thought UPS truck was in the driveway!!!
Thanks,
Mark

I seen NO other damage to the CP3 Body,Its doubtful any debris caused harm to the injectors. STOP using power service during temps above 0,its a waste of money.

More like a 24 valve from a '99. Although, either I got used to it, or it subsided after a 300 mile tow. I'll check further when I get back. Maybe air in system?
