My wife and I are considering this bed for a replacement to our damaged mattress. If you have this bed, would you offer your opinion?

Thanks.

Justin

My parents have a Tempurpedic bed and they love it. I have never seen or tried a Select Comfort, but I have tried the Tempurpedic and it is awesome. Some day when I have a lump of money burning a hole in my pocket I'll get one.

Tempurpedic beds can be found at some mattress retailers. No matter what kind you get, I would go to a store and have a good 20+ minute rest on one reading a magazine or paper before you buy anything.

Good luck!

My wife and I bought one about 5 or 6 years ago when we needed a new bed. It has been fantastic. In fact after telling the family that if they ever need a new bed to at least check into them my wifes mother bought one, my parents bought one, my sister and brother in law bought one over the course of a few years and they all love them. I can say that I dont think I will ever own anything different.

So, Barry--

Can we make the drive down and spend the night at your house?? :-laf

I was thinking that with all the members we have now, at least a COUPLE of people would have one... .

Barry, my question for you is this: So the mattress is good, but is it $2500 good? That's what they quoted us for the second nicest set. I've heard they are built cheaply, but no one cares because they sleep so well.

Justin

We got a Tempurpedic about a year ago. Haven't slept this good in years. Paid around 2k for it and complained to the wife everyday about the price until I slept on it for a couple of days. I'd pay 3k for one now. Hey! I wonder if we can start a bed war, like the transmission and oil and air filter wars! Sleep Number vs. Tempurpedic!

Hohn:

The only thing that I think is built cheap is the foundation. It is made out of some sort of corrugated plastic stuff. I do not know what else you would make it out of that would be any better or need to be any better. However I have not had any issues with the quality. I really dont see it to be an issue. I suppose if you move every six months it may not take the beatings as well as a regular frame type would. I fully expect this bed to last at least twenty years if not more. The bed does have some sticker shock but I think if you compare other high end beds they are not all that far apart. If you have a store close by ask them to take one apart for you and you will see the foundation. The mattress itself I think is of high quailty material. Now ours is 5 years old maybe six so they may be a bit different now. I know at the time we were all set to buy the second from top like yourself then they had got my wife convinced on the high end one and I could not unconvince her so we ended up with their best one at that time. Couldnt be happier with it.

Cool, Barry.

I'll see you around 6 tomorrow night:-laf

My Dad and stepmom have one, and they aren' the kind to really pitch a product. The LOVE their bed. They've had it for 8 years. No problems or breakdowns.

Sticker shock, you ain't kiddin'. The top model in Queen size is now over $3500!

Their most expensive bed is $4500. Yikes!

My folks paid like $1800, so it's gone up quite a bit!

We move a lot with me being in the USAF, and the gov't-contracted movers are infamous for ruining beds. That's partly why a bed that breaks down into pieces appeals to me.

If the plastic foundation ever does crap out, I could probably make a suitable replacement out of some MDF or plywood...

I paid 3K for the last bed. About 2 years ago.

It's OK, but not great. I have back problems and a sleeping disorder, so I havent slept good in years.

I've been thinking about the select comfort also latley.

We have had a select comfort for years. One of the things I don't like about it is the fitted sheet won't stay on very well unles you use sheet keepers (little clip on garter straps). Another thing I don't like is on a dual controll model you have seperate air bags that fill & in the middle is a foam runner kind of a seperator & if her side is a little firmer you roll over the foam& it doesn't give like the air mattress does.

Ours is out in our 5vr now & we are sleeping on a $60. 00 coleman mattress that has a cover on it & sleep better on it than the $1200. 00 select comfort. Would I buy another one? No! A co worker just bought the Tempurpedic & loves it but I'm not ready to take the gamble for $2500. 00.

I've had a Select Comfort bed for a few years. Got lucky and bought it used. Was only a few months old. Been pretty happy with it. Mattress only. Used a standard box spring and foundation underneath. Works jusr fine. The price SC wants for a foundation is stupid.

No longer wake up with a sore back from the bed and my arms don't fall asleep if I happen to be laying on my side.

One of the biggest things I like about it, is that it is adjustable.

I'd buy another when the time comes.

My wife and I purchased a Select Comfort bed in 99 when they still had the 90 day trial period. I think now it is only 30 days. The only problem we've had is that we are now spoiled and have a hard time when we stay in a hotel or with family. We decided to try it after spending $1200. 00 and $1500. 00 on 2 mattresses in about a year and a half. The first mattress hurt her back and the second caused my back to be stiff every morning and I would wake up during the night with numb arms and aching shoulders. We both also tossed and turned alot trying to stay comfortable. With the SC bed it is not unusual for me to wake up in the same position I went to sleep in, normally on my right side.

We purchased the king size pillow top with seperate air chambers and dual controls and it took us a couple of weeks to find the most comfortabe settings, or our sleep numbers as they now call them.

We paid $1750. 00 with it on sale and it's been worth every penny. After sleeping so well for the past 5 years I will pay whatever it cost to replace it when the time comes.

On edit I would like to add that about a year ago my wife's controller started acting up so we called SC and they had a new pump with new controllers (all one unit) delivered to our door 2 days later. We put the old pump and controllers in the box and it was picked up the next day by UPS and we were not charged for anything. They seem to be a great company and really stand behind the product they sell.

Select Comfort

We have two of the Select Comfort beds, one king an one twin size. I can not remember when we purchased them new, but has been I know at least over six years ago. I would ask my wife, but she's asleep right now ha,ha. Any way we slept on a king water bed for about fifteen years an the older I got the worse my back would feel in the mornings, sometimes so stiff I would have literlly roll out of the bed with all kinds of bones popping an cracking. Ever since we got the SC that has disappeared. The model we have has the remote control that is wireless. I believe at the time of purchase we paid around $2500. 00 for both units. The twin bed was orginally bought for our daughter, an when she moved out our son layed claims on the bed, there's nine years difference between the two. I would recomend a SC myself. And for the record I'm a 35 sleep number.

water beds...

I slept over the B. I. L. 's house, and he let my wife and I use the water bed.

NOT FOR ME!!!

He had the heater on way too high. My wife is always cold in bed, and I'm always on the verge of a sweat. :{

In addition to that, I couldnt stand up staight for hours after waking up. :(

That is why I don't have a wb anymore. Back hated it. One nice thing was though, I didn't have heat in my room, other than a small space heater. The bed kept you warmer, including your feet.

We bought our Queen size SC in 2001 and have loved every minute of it. We bought just the mattress, and got rid of the old mattress in our fiver. We are full-timers, and the SC weighs about a quarter of what the old mattress did. It fit right on the pedestal without any mods needed. What I like about it, as someone already mentioned, is it is adjustable. You are not locked into one setting. With my back, that is a blessing. Sometimes I have it pumped up so hard I almost roll off it because it puffs up a little in the middle. After a night or two of that, when my back gets better, just let air out and get comfortable again. We don't know what our numbers are, because we got the less expensive version. We just go by what feels right. If you buy it and decide you don't like it, you still have the 30 day guarantee, or I doubt you would have any trouble selling it to someone else.

Tempurpedic is very nice... BUT if you want to spend alittle less $$ and get a better bed look into a latex (yes it's a 'rubber' matress) bed. "build" wise it's very similar to a tempurpedic in that it's completely made of foam... no springs whatsoever.

We looked at the tempurpedic long and hard and it's VERY nice. But here's some facts:

#1) The latex matress has been around for many many years... at least 40. The tempur "material" is old but the matress aspect of it is not.

#2) The latex matress is less likely to house dust mites and other critters whereareas the tempur is more prone to it if not taken care of.

#3) In my opinion the latex matress is a fair bit more comfortable. I'm a licensed massage therapist so I'm looking at this from a medical standpoint also.

#4) A normal 'spring' type matress general has a 5-7 year warranty... and for them to last that long you have to flip it regularly and even then by 5 years or so it's becoming worn out.

A tempur mattress usually has a 10 year warranty... which is better than a spring matress.

BUT... most latex matresses have a 20 year warranty. Mine does with full WRITTEN guarantee that if I'm ever dissatisfied I get a new one OR my money back no questions asked.

#5) Here's the part you're going to like. The latex matress is less expensive. We got it in king size. Tempur matresses in this size and ones we actually liked were over $3,000.

We paid $1900 for our king sized latex matress with the warranty. We've been sleeping on it for about 8 moths now and it is terrific. The place we bought it even sells the more $$ tempur beds... but this guy recommended the latex over it even though it's less $$... I'm glad he did.

SOrry for being long winded but what it really boils down to is TRY them out... get what you like... and don't spend more $$ than you have to.
