I was driving down the road and my radio didnt seem to be loud enough. I checked left right balance and that was okay then checked fron back and total silence when I switched to front speakers only.

If I blew the speakers that would play but sound like crap but they didnt make a sound

Anyone else have this happen? I have to think it is something wrong with the radio.

I had the same thing happen.

After replacing the relay on the "choker" as Dodge calls it, they worked for a day, then dies again... . I couldn't figure it out..... then my buddy rolled down the passenger window, and the speakers fired up again! I haven't pulled the door panel to check the connections yet, but the front speakers haven't went out since...

Good luck tracking this problem down, it could be many things.

So Both of your front were dead right? Seems like you might loose one if the wire came off the speaker but not both. Do you have elec windows?

What is the choker and where was the relay?

The first thing I did when I brought my truck home, was put my 6x9 Boston Acoustic speakers in the doors. . I need my crispy sounding treble! I cannot imagine life with the junk they furnish in our doors from the factory, infinity, or no infinity!

MNan I thought it sounded great. My front left started working today but still no front right

Both of my Infinitys quit exactly one week apart. The amps are good , but the speakers are junk , luckily for us though dodge only sells them as a unit.

jponder,

I have power windows, and yes both speakers went out. I have the Infinity stereo.

The "choker" is behind the dash, just to the left of the cigar lighter. There is a relay on top of it, which is what you hear 'click' when you turn on the stereo.

The choker is listed as a relay on my invoice as p/n 56009941-AB relay spe 8052328 $52. 10

Rear Door Speakers DEAD

I bought my 99 used & it has a nice aftermarket CD unit & my rears are dead. I checked the wiring at the deck & every-things OK but their dead none the less. Is this "Choker" part of the stereo or the speaker system?

TIA,

Clay:)

I too want to know more about this chocker. I always put aftermarket stereos in my vehicles albeit 15 years ago and I dont know anything about a chocker or why its there or what it does or if you need it or anything. I thought initially that it couldnt be the speakers becasue why woul they both be gone. I realized I probably lost one awhile ago and then just noticed when the drivers side went down. It might be time to get a rock and roll system!

One of my more enjoyable dealer experiences:

Took the truck in for a recall, when I got it back the door speakers had quit working. Since the dealer was over 100 miles away I popped the door panel off to see what was going on.

The speakers were gone!

Called the dealer, he said they probably didn't have to remove the speakers to replace the throttle cable.

I expressed my displeasure, a week later there were two speakers in the mail whose wiring cuts exactly matched the loose wires in my doors.

Never heard the rest of the story, never went back to that dealer.

Incredible, You should hung up with the Dealer and called the District Attorney. I think it is safe to say that you have the right to call that dealer a stealer

I'm not 100% sure why there is a "choker" in the stereo system. It may be used as a relay for the amps on the speakers, it is not a physical part of the stereo or speakers though. If you replaced the speakers, I'm pretty sure you would not use the choker and run straight from the deck itself. I can't remember for sure, but I think if I unplugged the choker, the rear speakers would die too.

I'm not an electronics whiz and I don't play one on tv, so the guys that have replaced the entire stock stereo system would need to chime in on this one.

If you look under the dash, just to the left of the cigar lighter, you should be able to see what looks like a bunch of wires wound around something that is square, with a white-ish cloth covering. It is tucked in there pretty good, put your head up by the accelerator and shine a flashlight up there.

My drivers side front went out quite a while ago. I made do as is. There were times that it would work, but mostly not. Passengers has not went out yet to date.

Then I went to install my new mirrors and it hit me that "Today is the day" for speaker replacement! I had read on here that depth was an issue, so I never just went out and bought a set of speakers. I wanted to have the old one in hand.

I drove the truckwith door panel off to the stereo shop to dbl check fit. There was a set of $60 speakers that were quite a bit deeper and I was sure they wouldn't work. The other set ($80 Pioneers) was a little shallower, but still deeper than what I had hoped to find and new it would be close to rubbing the winder.

I took one speaker out to the truch and ran the winder up and own a cpl times and seemed fine. Installed it in the one door and left the stocker in the other 'till it dies. The model that I know fits is Pioneer TS-A6960R.

This is just speculation without research, but the "choker" could in fact be a "choke", which is normally a coil of wire wrapped around a metal or ferrite core. Its purpose would be to prevent the truck's electrical system noise from getting into the radio. Why it has a relay is anybody's guess. Could it be a capacitor? Often, capacitors (also known as condensers) are used with chokes to improve the filtering.

Definition of a teknishun: One who knows less and less about more and more, until he knows absolutely nothing about everything.

I used to be able to spell teknishun, until I became one.

Lest the engineers feel slighted; the definition of an engineer? One who knows more and more about less and less, until he knows absolutely everything about nothing. :D

Cheers!

I have a blown left front speaker. I went down to buy a set of 6x9's for the front and they told me that I could not use an aftermarket speaker with the stock deck. I was like "what are you talking about". They said that I had to buy the speaker from Dodge because the speaker had it's own amp or power supply? They said I could change the quad door speakers out, but not the front ones.

I have done alot of installs and never heard of this. Dodge wants $150. 00 for the speaker and I can live with the cracking noise for now.

Anyone give me any insight on this?

Loren

No kidding? Dodge started running Mind Blowers eh? What yr?! LOL!

Like I said, I changed mine out. I never saw any power leads on my '99. LOL!

I don't think your going to be getting a set of Mind Blowers from Dodge (or anywhere else - provided they still made them) for $150.

They told me that I would have to put in an aftermarket deck to change out to "normal" speakers. Wallet is getting low on Ben Franklins, so that will have to wait. :)
