Hey guys,

I nailed a seagull on the way to work Friday morning doing 50, and a small amount of the "honeycomb" grille material got busted. I have been toying with the idea of putting in some shiny chrome or stainless steel horizontal grille inserts, and now I am being pushed into it by circumstance... Anyways, do any of you guys have them on your trucks? If so, can you answer the follwing?

--Material
--Quality
--Manufacturer
--Cost
--Where you bought it

I really appreciate it!

Thanks in advance. #ad

I've looked at a lot of those bolt on grills and they don't seem to hold up very well. Most of the other ones I've seen on other trucks look pretty bad after a short amount of time. I think I am going to go with the Lund Stainless bug inserts. They come from JCWhitney and they have them in summer and winter and would cover up your problem. I saw a set on a truck the other day and I liked them. they have matching bumper inserts to. They are about 70 for grill and 50 for the bumper plus s&h.

Hey Evan, Big Joe has a set of the Stull black anodized/polished billet aluminum grille inserts in his '99 Sport grille. They look pretty trick and will not rust.

Steve St. Laurent has the ______(brand) stainless steel, semi-fine mesh screen inserts on his Ram. If I'm not mistaken, he also has the lower grille inserts that install next to the factory fog lights. These are the only grille inserts I've seen that fit almost flush against the front edge of the grille openings. I first saw these grille inserts on a Ram at Dyno Days in April. #ad

Hey Evan, I've got an idea... . why don't you install the "Sweet Tooth" grille as sold through Geno's Garage? That bad boy would really give your 4x2 some teeth. #ad

Evan, I have the Stull billet grill thats anodized black inside and brushed aluminum outside. I'm happy with the quality, it fits good, looks great and seems well built. I got it from Summit for 85 bucks PN--STU-5030B.

I have a set of Lund inserts installed. I would only run them in the winter, I installed them in the summer and noticed a performance issue and hotter running engine due to lack of air flow for the intercooler and radiator.

But they do help me warm up faster in the winter and keep a more constant temp.

My . 02 worth.

I have a set that came with my new 98 12v I just recently purchased. I think they are Lund. You can have them if you like. I switched my front bumper and red grills with Billet inserts from my 96 2500 to the new 3500. They are yours for the shipping. If you like I can e-mail you a pickture of what they look like.

Hey Evan,
I have the Stull aluminum inserts in the grill and bumper openings. They are still tight after 5K+ miles, protect the intercooler in the bumper openings and look much cooler than stock imo #ad

Just installed stainless steel tubes over existing honeycomb grille and down below over fog lights... . I love the way it looks. Makes an immediate statement with the stainless steel bug deflector. Got mine from Auto Trim Design in St. Louis. Installs in a few minutes. I really dig them!

Just installed the Lund stainless steel grille & bumper inserts. Took 10 minutes to install, very happy with the look. Got them from JC Whitney - ~$65 for the grille (set of 4 screens) and ~$47 for the bumper (2 screens). Kind of pricey IMHO for 6 metal screens, but what the heck, its only numbers on a Visa statement. #ad

Drove the truck afterwards and did not notice any increase in coolant temp. But since the weather is mild in AZ this time of year, the real test will start about next June.

I too installed the Stull Billet Grill and bumper inserts. High quality material and nice fit and finish. Available with or without fog light openings for bumper inserts.

Hey Evan,
I've had the Stull inserts for about a year, and they still look great. However, I think I'm changing my mind and like the Street Scene Speed Grille aluminum honeycomb grille inserts better. It's personal preference, but a lot of people already have the Stull.

Evan, the Lund inserts from JC Whitney are gorgeous, but just as 700RMK said, they trap the heat in the engine compartment, so no major BOMB runs while they are on. They are easy to take on and off.

I added Steel Horse Grille and they are a quality product with a reasonable price. Actually was surprised at how more restrictive the OEM honeycomb/plastic grille is compared to aftermarket.

I installed Stull Billet grill and fog inserts in both my '96 Gasser and my Y2K Diesel Ram. They look similar to Rotohead's but with a foglight cutout. Awesome!

Evan, Rob is correct, I just installed a set of Lund SS grille inserts, they look great #ad
I got them from Summit for $67, but I had to order twice since Summit didn't seem to understand what I was ordering (ended up having to call Lund for the PN then call Summit again).

The Lund inserts secure with 2 bolts at the ends of each panel which screws into a flat nut with tabs behind the honeycomb. The knobs on the screws are black plastic so I hit them with Bumper Chrome paint so they'd match up getter. The panels came with plastic trim which I had to remove because they didn't seat nicely otherwise. I would give Lund a B+ or A- on fit quality since the gaps are not perfectly even all the way around the edges. I am also concerned, since I removed the protective edge, the SS material will rub on the grill and damage it so it will look bad when I remove them in the summmer. We'll see I guess.

Vaughn

Vaughn, I removed those black plastic things too. I haven't seen any damage from them yet. I went out to the hardware store and got zinc carriage bolts, washers, and lock washers because the plastic screws that came with the system came loose from the vibration.
