Looking to build a spit, for the simple fact, people like to watch the pig go round.

And, I have a good gearbox from an old mangle.

Anyone have one they really like?

My uncle built a couple using the old oval shaped heating oil barrels that were in his house. Big rotisserie. He has cooked LOTS of hogs. Made them so he could pull them behind his pickup. Both have 2 pipes welded on top for the chimneys. The lids are part of the barrels. Cut them around just below the rounded part of the tanks and hinged them.

Sounds like he is planning on quitting doing it. Has done it for weddings and other parties.

I had to "design" a couple four our shop once many years ago. I still have one. .

It is made from all angle iron and is in pieces that get clamped together. Spit had 3 levels and I run it with a Dayton reduction drive gear motor 123:1 I think. . gives about 3 rpm at the spit thru the chain drive. I like it because it stores and transports easily.

Cooked about a dozen pigs on it over the years and it did just as well timewise as an enclosed unit one year at our marina when we had to cook two pigs.

I built one out of a 300 gallon tank. It is more of an oven. I used the burner from a propane-fired barbecue. I burn it slow and use wood for smoke. It takes about 24 hours to cook a 200 pound pig.

I have been to several parties where the pig was roasted on a spit, with rotation, over an open fire. Always, the grease would fall into the fire causing a flare-up that burned the loins to charcoal. I like to eat the loin!

"Variable speed hydrostatic."

So, are you going to park a tractor near the roaster or make up some sort of Briggs-n-Stratton rig with a wood splitter hydraulic pump?

I love building this type of stuff. :)
