Help with exhaust manifold problem

Hi,

I'm trying to get a hood for my 76 Bronco but the guy who has one in PA doesn't know how to go about getting something like that shipped. Does anyone know how to get something that large shipped from PA to SC safely?

Thanks,

Joe

Needs to be crated up in a plywood box. An open wood crate will allow stuff to hit the hood and dent it. Will ship via truck freight.

Make sure you insure it.

Yellow and Consolidated are the biggest freight houses I know of.

My Fiberglass hood came in cardboard surrounded by foam.

So, big cardboard box, some plasic bags and expanding foam should do it. . or plwood

Mark, that foam packing would really do the trick. Didn't think about that. If you could find someone with the spray set up it would be slick.

You might call some of the moving companies to see who they suggest for the crating. Only call the big companies (Graybel, United, etc. ) don't bother with the small local '2 drunks in a truck' discount places, they won't know.

The packing is the most important part. Too much wood and you will pay out the wazoo to ship (charge per weight). Too little and you are shipping expensive metal bits.

Mark suggested the foam. This is good stuff if you can find someone who is competent. Make sure that the cardboard is tri-wall (heavy, 3 layered, corrugated).

Good luck,

Scott

American Freightways

American Freightways (a fedx subsidiary) was the cheapest I could find for shipping a NVG4500 back and forth between Newport, RI and Standard Trans in Texas. Was right at $200.

The packing is best if you set it up so it can be moved by pallet jack.

May be cheapest (if time is an option) to just go get it.

shipping

You might check with Amtrak. They have express shipping. I've seen a crated engine go through, insured for $10k. If it weighs over 100 pds, it'll have to be palletized, but I doubt it will weigh that much. It may be oversized, though. I realize admitting I work for Amtrak could be setting myself up as if I were to stand up on this website and say "hey ya'all. I just bought me a Duramax" using an in your face tone. However, I do work for Amtrak. I guess that's how I got my interest in diesels started. (Maybe I could sneak out there and "tweak" a pump sometime). It'd be arriving in the next station before it left the last station. (still late of course). They do have a national toll free number. It's 1-800-872-7245.

Remember, I only suggested you call them about shipping it,I didn't suggest you ship it!! I don't work in that department anymore, but I've shipped tires that way. The biggest problem is only station to station, so someone has to take it to the station and someone pick it up at the other station.

just a thought...

shipping

Joe,

Check out www.freightquote.com. They shop for the best rate, do the paperwork, schedule the shipping, and bill you directly.

I stumbled onto them while trying to find an affordable way to have my Goerend-built 47-RH w/ triple disc converter shipped from Iowa to eastern Pennsylvania, and the core returned to Iowa. It cost less than $200 round-trip, even with additional insurance added!

By the way, I love the transmission, and Dave Goerend is great to work with!! Now I just need to add horses. How did I ever put up with only 160 for 157,000 miles???
