I bought the Thunderform setup and using my stock head unit. The instructions say to tap into the stock speaker wiring going to the rear door speakers. Anyone install it this way? How is the sound? Thanks.

Depending on which factory stereo you have, you might want to use the front door speaker signal instead. I have an `07 with the REC Nav unit and Infinity speakers. When I installed my MTX box I used the rear door signal at first, but it turns out they limit deep bass to the rear door speakers (to keep people from blowing them up I guess). The front door speakers are 6x9 woofers (no mids or tweeters) and are supposed to be the main bass speakers in the system. Once I re-wired to them, the bass was MUCH improved. Still, the system limits very deep bass even to the fronts when you turn up the volume. The only way around that is to replace the factory system, although MTX makes a module that supposedly compensates for the factory's eq curve to restore deep bass at loud levels.

Overall, I like the MTX box. I tested it in a friend's truck with an aftermarket system and it ROCKED. It rocks in my truck too, but as long as the factory system in in there it won't perform up to its potential (and neither will any other sub).

So, it looks like I should keep in the holiday spirits and buy myself an aftermarket head unit? Lol. I wondered if the factory setup would limit the sound of the Thunderform. Thanks for telling me about your experience.

To really use their full potential, you will need an aftermarket head unit with at leat 4 volts preamp outs. The thunderform as i reacall has their own amp built into them with the 2 10" subs. I am looking into getting them as well. You really can't go wrong, 2 10" subs, an amp and their own enclosure! crutchfield has them for $650. 00 i believe

They can be had for a lot less than $650, although I do buy some stuff from Crutchfield myself due to their excellent customer service.

If you get the box first, connect it to the front door speakers and then turn the bass on the factory head unit down quite a bit, making up for it by turning up the box. That seems to minimize the protective characteristics of the head unit. I'm really picky and even I haven't gotten around to replacing the head unit or the door speakers yet, after a year and a half with the box. I will though, some day. :-laf
