Coming up I am going to install a single guage A-pillar mounted EGT. Same as my 01 I was planning on going post turbo with the pyro. I will not be doing really any BOMBS to the truck so I don't need the responsiveness of the exhaust manifold and most of the time, except towing in the mtns, I need it only for shutdown temps.

Has anyone out there gone post turbo? It looks a lot harder place to drill for the probe than the 01 was... Anyone with a picture of the placement of the probe or a easy way to get a drill and tap in there?

On my '01 I drilled in place. On my '03 I took the elbow out due to the tighter clearance as you noticed. It's really not that hard to get the elbow off and back on, other than lining up the little locating dowel pins bewtween the elbow and turbo. If doing it again - I think I would pull the pins out.

Mine's post turbo. I was able to drill and tap vertically into the top of the elbow. I couldn't use my 1/2" drill due to space constraints but a smaller 3/8" one did the job. Sorry I don't have pictures, though.

Interesting thought. I had always planned on pre-turbo if I ever installed an EGT gauge, but the Jacobs exhaust brake I just installed is pre-drilled for a probe. Sure would make it easier to install. Why doesn't Dodge pre-drill the exhaust manafold and eliminate the risk of damage to the turbo?

For anyone with experience with both pre and post trubo probes, would having only a post-turbo EGT be of any value for towing heavy, or would the numbers be pretty meaningless? In other words, if I had a post-turbo EGT, could I add XXX degrees to the readings to approximate pre-turbo numbers for the sake of preventing engine damage?

Great, I think I will get a 90 degree drill and give it a shot.

I think that if you don't have any intentions of BOMBing your truck then post turbo is a safe place to drill and, I know some think it is a wives tale, your probe can fail without doing any damage. I plan on keeping these trucks for a lot of time and mileage, so probe failure is a concern for me.

As far as towing heavy with the post turbo probe, I guess I don't tow super heavy, I have a 9' slide in and pull a 3 horse slant load bumper pull trailer attached to my reese titan on the 01. Loaded up I'm sure I am not exceeding the vehicles weight rating, officer ;) :D . But I did go out and get a DRW 3500 for that load.

I have seen my EGT guage sit at 1000 degree for several minutes pulling over Wolf Creek pass in the summer. So people say that adding an amount is not good enough, that the differential is never a constant 'x' amount. But again if you are not gonna do any BOMBs then your EGTs are not gonna really get super high, except in extreme situations and then you will know to back off a little.

But on the other hand, a pre turbo is not reliable for cool down at all. I can tell you right now that I have had to let me truck idle for 15 minutes to achieve 350 degrees to shut off, and pulling into my driveway, every night I need a 5 minute idle to cool down to 350. And on this board I hear people shutting down in 1 and 2 minutes. I get too impatient to wait to 300, I can't imagine how long that might take! So that is why I have post, because longevity is my goal not HP/Torque, that is easy to say when you already have 500+ ft/lbs!!!

I have both pre turbo (TST guage) and post turbo (x-monitor) probes. When I'm running my EZ on level 4 and my TST on 2 hp and 0 tq and towing 10k I can hit 1200F on the pre turbo before I hit 900F on the post turbo. When I hit 1200F pre turbo I'm at about 825F post turbo. If I back out of it and hold the temps at 1200F pre turbo the post turbo will eventually climb up to 900 degrees and sometimes a little higher. One thing it did notice was that the TST on 2 hp and 0 tq dropped my egt's by about a 100F vs. having the TST off.

I actually hit 800 empty for the first time today, I was going up hill on the highway and floored it from about 1800 RPMs to abour 2700 RPMs. The temp went up pretty quickly right with the speed, when I let off the temp was back at 400 in about 5 seconds and about 2100 RPM, must be because of the high RPM the engine was still running moving alot of air through the turbo.

I hit 800 empty every Day! But I guess that my normal drive is not normal for most. I gain 4000 ft of elevation to end at my driveway, which is 9800 ft about sea level, in about 20 miles. So I never see below 600 going home. But going down, especially in the winter, coasting in 6th, if it is cold enough I will see 100 degrees on the guage with the engine running, and the truck going 70 mph!

I had mine post and have since moved ot pre. I like having it before the turbo because of the responsiveness and not having to do math and wonder a little. I did read an article that claimed a 10* drop thru the turbo for every pound of boost it puts out. Doesn't sound too far off of what I have read here.

Mine's installed post turbo like my last three were. I run stock power so shutdown is what I'm looking at. Removing the elbow and reinstalling it was the hard part. The pins are hard to line up with the clamps being ornary.

Pics in readers rigs...

Jacobs Exhaust Brake / EGT Probe

DO all Jacobs Exhaust Brakes have the port for a EGT Probe ?

I have a 2003, HO with Jacobs E Brake. Where in the ebrake is the port located ? What size port is it ?

Thanks

put mine post, drilled the raised section near the turbo. the elbow comes off easy but the bottom clamp is 10mm and top is 11mm 2003 so auto 4x4

The Jacobs on my '03 didn't have the port so my probe is 2" down from the flange in the down pipe. Sure wish it would have had one!

Thanks, I wish the last one with all four was clearer I have a tough time with getting good quality pictures to be below the max size restriction.
