i have been struggling for some time now as to which oil i want to use in my truck. the two finalists so far are amsoil and mobil one delvac, but the amsoil is fairly difficult to get and somewhat controversial, while the delvac is very hard to find in my area and extremely expensive when i can find it (app. $30 per gal. ) today i was at a trusted diesel injection service business buying some stanadyne, when they informed me that they strongly suggest schaeffer oil, specifically the super 7000 synthetic. they claim they have had tremendous success with this oil, and i can buy it here for about $60 for 5 gallons. my problem is that i've never even heard of this oil, and am not overly excited about using a product in my pride and joy that i'm not familiar with. anyone out there familiar with this product or can give me any advice on it?

My dad has been using Schaeffers for 15 years and he loves it . He has a 85 Toyota Diesel p/u and that is what he runs in it. I have an uncle that lives in Arkansas that is a dealer for them. .

We had a rep come out trying to sell us Schaefer hydraulic oil a few years back. I don't remember if we ever bought it, but it looked like pretty good stuff.

Gotta agree with EMDiesel. Dad's been using Rotella in our Deere's on the farm for 20+ years now without any problems. It's all I run in my Cummins.

fully synthetic?

cooker ...

i agree that the price does not reflect that of a fully synthetic oil, but part of the reason for the inexpensive price is that the d. i. s. business buys it in 55 gallon drums and then they then sell it out of them. they did have a one gallon container there from the factory, and it distinctly said it is 100% synthetic, made from a pure synthetic base. they sure are high on it.

Paul;

I've used Rotella in gas engines and love it. My local Sam's Club sells it by the 55 gal drum. I use Delo in my Cummins for the summer. Winter I switch to CENEX as the 10W-30 has a cold pour and flow of 5 weight dino, but not synth.

My brother runs John Deere oil in all his diesels, including the Cummins. He does all the servicing and told me the best the JD oil is the best he has ever used. Not sure of the other brands (conventional dino I'm sure), but he swears by the JD.

I, too, am looking at synthetics. I thought Delvac was the easiest synth to find. I find it in many truck stops especially the ones with service bays. Many times they carry it in bulk and pass the discount. Let us know what you decide.

k. vicker,

On Schaeffeur's website the Supreme 7000 15w40 is a synthetic blend. The only fully synthetic oil that they make is a 5w30 gasser oil.

The Supreme 7000 15w40 is less than $3. 00/quart (I think it's around $2. 80) even in smaller quantities. You don't need to buy bulk to get it for a decent price.

If you have any questions about Schaffeurs you might try the message board on this website www.bobistheoilguy.com

He will be able to answer all the questions you have.

Hey k. vickers,

What have you heard controversial on the Amsoil. I thought they had pretty good stuff and if I missed something bad on them would like to know. I have my oil sent to an independent lab about every second oil change and so far all the tests have come back good. Most I've gone between changes was 12k, & most of it pulling a 31' 5th wheel. It is hard to find, but for very few bucks you can be a dealer for 5 years, just so you can purchase oil for your own use, that is what I do.

thanks ryan ...

i spent some of the day looking around on the internet, and talking to my diesel mechanic (whom i trust completely)

i think i've decided to go full time with the delvac one. i've always felt that mobil one wrote the book on synthetic oils. i have no doubt that amsoil is good oil and i have no problem with it, but i run mobil one in every vehicle i own, so i guess there's no sense in doing anything differently. i just hope my local walmart supercenter starts carrying it so i can get a better price on it.

thanks for the replys. tdr people are the greatest :D

JohnE ...

in the past year or so i've been on this board there have been so many threads that argue the pros and cons of amsoil. those that use it seem to be very loyal to it, and those that don't like it bash it regularly. the biggest controversy seems to be something about amsoil not seeking some sort of certification, claiming the certification doesn't mean anything anyway.

as above stated, i have no doubts that amsoil is good oil. i'm just really sold on the mobil one products and had to convince myself it was worth the expense and problems finding it. good luck in whatever you choose to use. ;)

The only controversy is between the people who use Amsoil and like it, verses the people who don't use it and want everyone else to stop using it.

I don't know why. I guess it is just like the Cummins is obviously the best, but people are still buying V-8 Diesels!

There has never been any probems with the product, all things considered, it is clearly the best 100% full synthetic available.

You will be happy with the Delvac, it is a quality product.

Anyone know what Amsoil uses as a base. Some years back, I heard of a lot of research on the oil of the jojoba plant which is very plentiful in the west. Supposedly had the lubricating qualities of whale oil which I understand is one of the finest lubricants known. I just wondered if any of the synthetics were using a jojoba oil base.

Jojoba was in Star Wars wasn't he? Hello Hill Country in Texas, love that country, will be down there in September. New Braunfels was home for many years.
