04 Dakota auto transmission trouble

Hey guys,

My brother-in-laws wifes 2001 F150 super crew has just had a spark plug come right out of the head. I think it was cylinder#8,and my brother-in-law just finished replacing the heads on it. It seems some of the other plugs were on the verge of coming out as well. Someone told him it i a common problem on these ford 4. 6 litre engines. Is this true?

He bought some higher performance heads from summit for a mustang, and then ran into troubles with the intake manifold gaskets not matching up with the heads, and manifold. Why is it Ford decided it wasa good idea to have even different parts fot the "same" engine in the truck. He told me there are either Romeo,or Windsor engines, and they are different dependibg on which one you have. Man am I glad I work on my Mazdas which are so much simpler.

apparently the plug problem is common on the modular ford motors because i almost can't pick up a specialty tool catalog without seeing a repair kit for those motors in the first few pages, i think it can be done with the kit in a short amount of time in place, i work on euro cars so i don't have any personal experience with them

The heads are repairable. And yes... it's pretty common on the 4. 6, 5. 4 and V10 engines. They use like 3 threads to hold the spark plug in. I was told it's due to detonation under heavy load. There is a shop local to me that can do custom programming, they claim they can eliminate that issue as well as up the milage.

snap on sells a tap/rethreading kit just for that, or just go to pep boys and get the $20 repair kit. it uses a special tap that cuts oversized threads for an insert (not a helicoil but a solid steel insert) and a tool for locking it in place. i have done 6 without 1 coming back with problems. and you can remove the plug to change it with no worries of it coming out.
