You can't do that with any Chrysler/Dodge electronics '06 and later because of the CANBUS computerized electronic controls that are routed over the 12v wiring.

Nothing '06 or later will work if you try to stick it in your '01.
 
I didn't own an '05 and can't tell you if the '06 and later sound system head unit will "fit" but I don't think the head unit size and shape are the same. Electronically they are compatible with Gen II trucks. I believe the features you mentioned were offered.

A quality Kenwood, Pioneer, Alpine, etc. from Crutchfield is probably a better choice.
 
in my neon r/t I just replaced my PBB (cassette) with a RBQ (in dash 6 disc) and it also plays the ext cdc (OEM 4 or 6 disc seperate changer). Also bought a single in dash CD wich is a RBK. My friends 04 has both the cass & CD and I think it is the same mounting.
