Haven't used my A. C. this winter (I live in the N. W. ) and I went to use it now and it won't work. Got myself one of those cheep gauge & filler kits at the local auto store & it showed the system had plenty. One thing I've noticed is when the AC is on at it's coldest setting the compressor comes on for only about 5 seconds and then shuts off for around 10 second and keeps cycling like this but no cold air.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Lonnie

Don't trust the cheapo guages for one ... . If the compressor is cycling quicly and no cold air is found a slightly low charge is 90% the case (10% could be a pressure switch but unlikely)

I dumped in a can and mines good to go.

What Tim said.

If you want to check for sure - jumper the pressure switch and see if it cools down. If the charge is low, the suction line should develop ice instead of condensation.

If it comes on at all then cycles off - it tells you the switch is working. I doubt the switch would change its cutoff setting - usually either works or burns up.

If it didnt take adding the can of freon make sure the a/c clutch is pulling in. It sounds like the low pressure switch does have enough pressure to make, jumper the switch and the clutch should pull in. good luck

Yes the clutch is pulling in and the radiator fan comes on.

I finally got it to take most of the can and am getting some cold air but it still cycles rapidly and I only get cold when the pump is engaged.

Guess I'm not sure how to jump the low pressure switch. ?

May just take it to my local AC guy.

Thanks for the help.

You could have air in the system (I can't remember, if we have a site glass or not). If it does have air in the system... that also could cause your a/c to cycle.

Hey, if your a/a clutch is pulling in and out it is still low. Add another can, the clutch should stay pulled in. And the suction line should be getting cool or cold.
