I want to know of any methods to reduce cylinder head pressure





reason for wanting to know

  • I want to add water injection to cool and clean, (not methanol, I have enough fuel if I need it. ) probably a 325ml at near 10lb and another 325ml above 20psi
  • looking to add very small amount of propane as a catalyst on at 3 psi, off at 15psi, injected at the air horn like water/meth systems so there is not lag in its on/off cycle.
  • I would like to keep my timing box (edge Juice) I keep it on lower settings.

cutting propane off early will allow me to use it safely as a catalyst and improve efficiency. I get free propane. Not planning on using it as a power adder (it will turn off by 15psi. )



My question again is: What methods are there to reduce cylinder head pressure?
 
How about running biodiesel? Just throwing out a guess here but i think it may burn somewhat slower therefore may lower peak pressure a bit. Not sure if this is actually true in the real world, but rate of fuel burn would seem to be a factor on peak pressure.

Also, this is not sticking to the bounds of your question, but I have to ask if the possible "kaboom" factor of the propane injection is worth the benefits it gives. I like the idea of using a non-volatile fuel like diesel to power our rigs, but propane sorta cancels out that safety feature. Maybe Im totally wrong, but I dont get the warm & fuzzies with propane, especially if the grid heaters remained connected. For me, I would rather keep the grid heaters, and keep things sweet and simple.

You mean compresion ratio or combustion pressure?



If you are not talking compression ratio the easiest, just guessing, way would be to lower boost.

timing and propane increases combustion pressure/ cylinder head pressure.
boost has an effect on it, but measure pressure going into the cylinder, not the pressure when it ignites.

I have a free supply of propane, tons of 7 gallon bottles.
Propane in small quantities can lead to better combustion, cleaner+ more power because of efficiency.

going to rig it up with a manual switch so I can turn it on/off when I want. 2 solenoids, one to turn on at 5psi another to turn off at 15psi, with a flow/pressure that will be low.

I will tune the setup with my box off to reduce problems (start off without the increased timing. ) also I will turn off the grid heaters (thanks)
 
If you are worried about the possibility of doing damage with propane, then don't run it. the 30 hp/extra mpg you may gain might not outweigh the possibility of your head gasket chitting the bed.
 
Is this your daily driver your going to be injecting propane into the intake of? The head gasket chitting the bed is one possibility of many. Let us know how it turns out.
