I picked up a new sensor at the dealer today. I started looking around under the hood trying to find where it goes. The only place I can find is right next to the thermostat. The one I bought is larger. I called back the parts dept. to cross reference the number again and he assured me that that was the correct number. I asked him where it goes and he said on the back of the head. I looked and I can't find it. The only things on the back of the head are the banjo fitting for the return line and a plug. Anyone with an idea?

Jeff, mine is at the right front of the engine, just in front of rt. side of the valve cover. It looks to be about 3/8" in diameter, your truck is 12 valve isn't it. bg

Not to be to much of a smart a$$ but my idea is to find another parts man!
According to my 2001 shop manual the only coolant temp sensor is on front of the head. I just looked at my truck and it's next to the thermostat housing, about 1/2" NPT. What year is your truck? There have been some changes on the 24 valves, but I don't know if the coolant temp sensor is one of them.

Jeff,

I had to check the archives too to see if you had a 12 or 24 valve. Like 85CJ said, your parts man is wrong. The 12 valve sensors are at the back of the head. A ***** to get at too.

According to this picture from Fritzs' web page the ECT or Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor is # 16. Like you said. #ad

Copy this picture and give it to the parts man. #ad

The mechanic I talked to that said to get this part said there were two sensors. The one next to the thermostat controls the gauge and apparently this one goes elsewhere and talks to the computer. Maybe not.

Jeff, sorry I mis-identified your truck. You need to go to the site listed above by HemiDart. It covers the fuel system for the 24 valve. Go down to "Electric Transfer Pump". It says "The transfer pump uses pulse width modulation to provide two duty cycles. Full speed when the engine is running and half speed when cranking to prevent over pressure which could keep the fuel injection pump from operating". Also there is some info on the fuel pump relay located in the PDS. You may not have a drain back problem, it may just be the controlls of the transfer pump or the relay. I know this is getting deep, sorry if I made it deeper. bg
