I saw a picture somewhere where someone removed the center section of the factory intake tube and replaced with a 'straight through' section which was made of 5" painted PVC pipe.

I just ordered an Amsoil EAA189 Nano drop in and wanted to really free up the stock box so my engine can get good air.

From what I've read, the middle section of the intake tube has some sort of a baffle built in to quiet the intake noise and there are fins or some sort of an air deflecting device at the far end of the tube that attaches to the turbo. It would seem to me that the center section baffling would be pretty restrictive? What about the fins/deflectors down at the end?..... Are they restrictive? TIA.

On edit: Someone referred me to a place that sells aluminum intake pipes and gave me a direct link to one that fits like a glove in order to replace the center section of the factory intake pipe. Here's the link: http://store.airflo.com/al5-5.html

I made my own. I took two 90* silicone 4" ID elbows and connected them inbetween with a piece of 4" aluminized exhaust tubing. A few hose clamps and it connected perfectly to the AFE airbox and turbo. Total cost approx. $50. 00.

I personally think that the stock unit is fine. The section with the baffles has a larger diameter then the rest of the intake and the most restrictive part of the system is the inlet to the air filter box. I opened the bottom of the filter box and installed a dryer duct to the area behind the front bumper. But, I have seen more than one dyno report that shows that there is no power gain with intake work.

Airaid Sells One Or You Can Do What I Did , Take Your Stock One And Hollow It All Out , Took About A Hour To Do

FishMan,

Being that I haven't taken my intake ducts off YET, can you tell me what's involved in hollowing it out?

The head is the restriction point, not the intake. You can make the intake flow more that is true, then it will hit the wall in the intake ports that are untouched.

A piece of shedule 40 4" PVC and 2 Schedule 80 4" PVC connectors glued together the same length as the factory tube and your done. :)

Check out True Flow Intakes

I did not want to change the stock airbox on my truck, because alot of the K&N type cone intakes get dirty fast from road dirt and they suck in hot air from under the hood. I bought the True flow kit for about $150 which includes their foam filter and a replacement tube, they claim that their filters are superior to gauze type because they trap way more dirt and flow better than oil/gauze filters even when dirty, this keeps your oil cleaner.
